Is drinking a pint of rum harmful to one's health? If so how dangerous is it? Has anyone done this before?

A pint is a lot of alcohol. It's equivalent to something like 10 pints of beer (depending on the liquor). So I guess your question is, is binge drinking bad for your health? The answer is yes, but occasional binge drinking won't have substantial long-lasting effects. Regular binge drinking can do a lot of damage.

And yeah, I've drank that much alcohol in a night on numerous occasions. It doesn't feel good the next day. I'm trying to give up binge drinking.

Over how long of a period? 1 pint is 11 shots roughly. I have consumed 2x martini's within an hour. Each martini was 5 shots worth of Gin (large martini glass filled all the way to the brim). All of this without ill-effects the next morning. I have done similar with sipping tequila that has been chilled, approximately 10 shots worth over the course of 2 hrs.

I didn't feel drunk until I tried to stand up. I promptly sat my ass back down and drank some water.

When reasonably good alcohol is chilled and you are eating food while socializing, it is quite easy to go through many servings of alcohol esp. when the bartender is generous.

The top ~2/3 cm of a martini glass (depending on curvature of course) is approximately an entire shot. If the bartender fills to just below the brim versus, right up to the top of the glass, it makes quite a bit of difference.

Take 1 0z of vermouth, swirl it in the glass then discard it. Take gin, put in shaker with cracked ice, shake until chilled. Put in martini glass.

I give you a classic martini. It's just gin in a glass.

No. Gin in a glass is just gin in a glass.

You have to keep the vermouth in there for it to be a martini. Does swirling and discarding really help? Why not just use a few drops of vermouth per drink instead of throwing away an oz at a time?

Also, for the original question, drinking a pint of hard liquor.

Liquor as I've always seen it measured in large bottles is either 750 ml (about a 1/5 of a gallon I think?) and a handle (1.75 liters). According to Google, a pint is about 473 something something ml.

This depends on a lot of things. Notably, how fast you drink, what is in your stomach at the time, and your weight/tolerance. I've known people who can drink half a fifth of vodka in a single sitting. Dangerous if you ask me though.

Also, the proof matters quite a bit. Drinking half a 750ml bottle of blue label Smirnoff 70 proof will be easier to stomach than red label 80 proof.

And Eminem has drunk a 1/5 of vodka. Dare him to drive?

Seen it done with Vodka, the guy is still alive... Although he won the bet it's not very clever. Your liver wouldn't thank you for such an onslaught.

A pint's not /that/ much. That's the hip flask type bottle that's usually behind the counter. It's mostly a time thing. Putting it down like you would a pint of beer will be worse than drinking it reasonably over time.

I haven't done that in 5+ years, but there have been several times in the past where I've downed a fifth of Captain Morgan's private stock.

Once, I downed about 2/3 of a handle of vodka and then drank lots of beers. I woke up the next day bruised. I learned later that day that I had gotten into a fist fight the last night.

So, if you drink enough to "black out", then it can be very harmful to your health. I don't know your weight/tolerance level .... A pint wouldn't do that to me .... but I'm freakishly big.

I've been there many-a-time. Usually didn't regret it but not really the greatest feelings in the world. I've blacked out a few times, finished almost an entire handle of vodka on one occasion, drank 18-25 shots another night. Won't kill you, but your liver won't like you anymore after a while of that kind of treatment.

Edit: 6'1", 210 pounds, medium build.

If it's the first time you've done it, then it's perfectly fine as it will only kill your weakest brain cells.

That's just the way it's done, you coat the cold glass and dump the rest.

Harmful to one's health? Are you kidding? Impairs judgment, motor function, kills brain cells, damages liver, competes with lactate for conversion into something useful, downregulates protein synthesis, negatively effects hormone function, induces depression, blah blah blah. Alcohol in itself is not bad for you. The amount in which idiots drink it is (ie a pint of booze).

Yeah, that's good and all, but how is it even remotely harmful to one's health?

A pint of rum can indeed be hazardous to your health...Depending on your body weight and tolerance, it COULD be enough to give you toxic alcohol poisoning...or it may just fuck you up.
You may, especially if you're not used to drinking that much, spend the next day wrapped around the great porcelain god...whose name is RALPH...and hope the hell you die...but know you'll have to get better to die. (been there)

With many types of booze, what you mix with will be as important in the creation of a hangover as the booze itself. Choose wisely.

T'was a time in my life when I drank a fifth of Crown Royal EVERY NIGHT. Never missed a night, regardless of the occasion or reason.

Then again, I was just over 200 lbs and had a VERY high tolerance to the alcohol. (doesn't mean it wasn't harmful to me...I just tolerated it better than others.)
There were a couple of days when I went to work feeling...less than 100%. :D But NEVER got in the seat of a crane when I was in that shape. Those days were the days when my apprentice got some seat time. :p I rarely experienced a BAD hangover...but once in a while, it'd catch up to me.
In all my years of boozing, I think I missed 3-4 days because I was too FUBAR'd to work.

Nowadays, I get buzzed on a couple of drinks. :D Cheap drunk FTW!

We have some friends in central Tennessee who have a source for some of the finest peach moonshine I've ever had. Goes down VERY smooth.

I never could stand the taste of gin. Always left a nasty oily feel in my mouth...and the flavor left a lot to be desired.
Vodka martinis I could drink. Just not the dammed gin.

A pint? Are you serious? Come talk to me after you've downed your second fifth in a short time. Yes, it's bad for you of course, but it's not a quantity to be discussed as if it was important.

.473ml is not THAT much. Could do some damage if you're a 90 pound girl who never drinks.

Who talks about liquor in pints anyway?

Edit: I've finished off a liter of whiskey in a night, a few times, and never had much more than a bad hangover the next day.
