Dressing for an interview

While I know that you have to dress in a suit and black shoes for any professional job, does the same apply for a sales gig at an electronics store? I honestly don't have a suit that fits and find spending $300 on black shoes and a suit for a job that pays $7.50/hr is kinda odd to me.. Will dress pants and a tie do or do is a suit a must? Will it give me an edge?

P.S. I have brown shoes-my gf laughed at me the last time I wore them to an interview.. I had no idea that they're taboo!

I got hired once wearing shorts, sandals, and a t-shirt at a retail store. You're much better off wearing at least some slacks and a button up shirt

no its not a must, just wear a dress shirt, maybe with a tie(i wouldn't), dress slacks, and decent dress shoes(nothing special) thats what i would do, but any reg shoe could do if you don;t feel like buying new ones

Dress pants and shoes will do fine. You don't want to look overly impressive either. Business casual is better fit for the job. Tuck in dress button down shirt, pants, belt, tie, and dress shoes. Tie is optional.

Wear something close to what you will be expected to wear in the store. Not many stores make you wear a suit, so don't wear one to the interview.

Thanks for all the advice.. Looks like I'll be wearing some slacks and a clean shirt.. Off to buy some Payless shoes - I guess that brown shoes are a little goofy...

DO NOT wear underwear for an extra edge on the competition.

Speaking of interviews...I have 4 on Friday that will last 2 hours (for 1 position). The suit is coming out for this one. 🙁

Hey, I had a pair of dress shoes from payless that lasted for 2 years! Ugly as sin, maybe...

Brown shoes with khakis are fine! Make sure you coordinate your belt - match leather to leather and metal to metal (if wearing jewelry). Don't waste your money on new shoes if you already have perfectly good ones.

Really? I've been told that brown shoes are as casual as loafers.. Not that I own loafers...

I wouldn't go overboard. A nice (perhaps textured) light colored button down with perhaps khakis or dark pants. I think your gf is right about the brown shoes, though I'm not sure it matters at an electronics store.

I seriously doubt the interviewer will care about the color of your shoes. However, if wearing black shoes will make you feel confident, then go buy them. You being confident in yourself is HUGE!

There are definitely certain colors of suits that you cannot wear black shoes with. I see plenty of professional business people wearing brown dress shoes all the time. It's more about the style of the shoe than it's color, that regulates how casual the shoe will be. Just to say "brown shoes are casual" is simply not true.
