Dreamscene performance impact

When using dreamscene does the small hit on the CPU or GPU impact application performance? What I mean is...will I notice games running slightly slower or does dreamscene stop the video when something takes over full screen?

Anyone tried it?

I'm wondering if perhaps having a slightly older generation CPU (single core) would lose too much performance.

Let's put it this way, I tried it on this system (A64 3200 venice @ 2.6Ghz coupled with an X800GTO unlocked to 16 pipes).

CPU usage was about 80% for some of the beefier Dreamscene backgrounds. If I opened a new window and in so doing concealed the desktop, that figure dropped to about 2%.

So yes, I'm pretty sure that once the desktop is not visible, Dreamscene is deactivated.

I didn't continue using it because I didn't really like the idea of 80% CPU usage while looking at pretty waves on a desktop, not sure if I was doing anything wrong.

You'd be fine with your E6400 though.

Well, I'm thinking for my sister's computer. It's just an A64 3000+

As long as it doesn't impact performance when doing other tasks it's ok. I only use about 17% CPU with the heaviest video I have found with my C2D system.
