Dreamhost: 80% off first year of hosting!!

This is cut and pasted from http://www.dreamhost.com/promo-888.html, which is linked off of their homepage.

For all you doubters, YES this is a very reliable host with VERY generous and ever increasing features (such as constantly adding GB's of bandwidth and MB's of storage every week).

Have we got a treat for you! Save over 80%!

Our birthday cake is so moist. So delicious. It's a miracle the poor soul above didn't spill any on that beautiful white couch before passing out from its chocolatey goodness. Such is the lure of our birthday cake.

We really wish that YOU could savor the flavor of our heavenly chocolate cake, but FedEx and UPS frown on that sort of thing! So to celebrate eight years in the hosting biz, we're cutting the price of all four of our "shared hosting packages" for a limited time!

The first 888 customers to sign up for service with DreamHost for a one-year or two-year term using the promotional code "888" will save 80% off the first year of their hosting! You'll save as much as $767.52!

But that's not all! Now you can host as many domain names as you want on any of our hosting packages! If that's not enough to get you dancing, we don't know what is!
This offer is good for the first 888 new accounts only. Once they're gone - they're gone!

The Fine Print:

* This offer is for new customers only - those who do not have an active account with DreamHost.
* If you sign up and forget to use the "888" promotional code, you WILL NOT receive the sale pricing. No amount of complaining will change this!
* Domains and accounts may not be transferred from an existing DreamHost Web Hosting account to an "888" hosting plan.
* We reserve the right to deny this sale pricing to anyone at our discretion.
* Hosting fee must be paid with a credit card one or two years in advance.
* This sale will remain in effect until all 888 discounted hosting plans have been given away.
* At the end of 12 or 24 months, your account will be automatically renewed at the current rate.
* Get your friends to sign up too, and you could potentially earn FREE HOSTING through our referral program, DreamHost Rewards! Referring new customers is NOT a requirement of this promotion.
* Customers using the 888 promo code will NOT count towards anyone's referral credit.

Nice find, thanks OP, I've been looking for good cheap hosting.

Edit: Got a year of hosting with domain name registration for $23.88. You might want to change the title of this thread, however, because the 80% off only applies to the FIRST year of hosting. Thus if you purchase the 2 year plan, you get the first year at 80% off, but pay full price for the second year. Thanks again OP.

I got in on that and they have been awesome.

I don't know if it still works. I highly doubt it will

They announced 777 - the 7'th year anniversary deal was closed.

I'd be very surprised if it was still somehow available.

User made codes that offer the max discount (I made one, but it counts as a referral for me even though I get nothing so I doubt I can post it) will get you the L1 plan for $22.40. User made codes don't expire unless they choose to, but 888 is a better deal if you need something more than the L1 plan.

hmmm, seems pretty nice so far, I have to admit, I'm used to cpanel though. But god, I'm extracting my site backup through the shell, it's taking f o r e v e r.

DirectAdmin > cPanel > DreamHost 🙂

I have been using dream host service quite some time. and i never had any problems at all....
this offer is really hot!!!

I've been on Dreamhost since the end of July (on the "777" deal, about $9.24 for a year for 2400MB of space, later doubled to 4800MB). I'm quite pleased with it - many of the other "cheap" webhosts that I've seen don't seem to include nearly as many features as they do (whether they disallow shell access, only include enough space for a basic website, or whatever). It hasn't been 100% trouble-free (mainly I wish the MySQL servers were faster), but they're generally good about fixing problems quickly. I also kinda wish they had unrestricted PHP in non-CGI mode, but I guess you can't have everything (and I've learned enough to work with that limitation anyway). For the money, I don't see any reason not to try it... If you don't end up liking it, all you've wasted is about $10 and you get a whole year's worth of hosting out if it 😛

DirectAdmin > cPanel > DreamHost 🙂

I disagree. The only people using DirectAdmin and cPanel are those who are still being diaper trained in webhosting. If you're using DreamHost, you already know what you're doing.

I know what I'm doing in the shell and all, I just like cpanel because it's so much faster to navigate than have to using a hierarchical menu....and it looks pretty.

Is there anything for people like me who got on the 777 deal last year and are about to run out? I'm not sure if I should stay with DreamHost or look for something else...

Someone on another forum reported that they received a ($80?) gift voucher, but it's not clear if everyone gets this.

It's really too bad that you can't renew at this rate after a year. That's kind of why I'm going to pass on this and wait for another deal from DeviousTrap. ~$120 is too much for me to spend on hosting after the first year.
