Dreamcast question ---c'mon, I know there are a lot of DC junkies here. :)

How many VMU's do I need?
Do I even need a VMU? What the heck can I do with that tiny LCD?! Should I just go for that 800block Interact Memory card?
Is the rumble pack worth my money or is it just a cheesy money-making add on?
Will a normal S-Video cable do, or does Sega's have some magical powers in their's? 😉

Any ideas on the best deals on a dreamcast? I'm thinking EBworld.com (DC- 149.99, 2nd Controller- 29.99=179.98-20% w/ MS Passport=$143.98), or is there someplace better?

Thanks!

I hope to order tonight if I get answers in enough time, if not, I'll order tomorrow.

You could just get a 4x one. But the screen is kinda nice. I have a 4x one that hoosk up to my computer (so I really have unlimited space 😛 ) and an official Sega one.

About the rumble pack, play some heavy heavy Dual Shock games on the Playstation for a long while, then play without it. If you immediatly notice the difference and think its not as good, get one ;P They is a cheap one out there too that doesnt cost much.

Any S-Video cable will do. But it has to be Dreamcast supported - there isnt a normal S-Video output jack on the Dreamcast.

That deal might be one of the best. Seems like a good price.

I bought a 3rd party VMU, the 4x one...from performance or whatever, and that thing is just like a Sega one, but has even more pages! i havent even experianced one problem with it, so just go ahead and buy the 4x one..more room and its a LOT cheaper!

I bought a 3rd party memory card and had to return it the next day - errors and memory check crud... :|

Anyway, get the Sega one, and I have 8 games and only need one...

/edit (ok - they are actually my husband's!)

Zipp - You want two SEGA controllers, a SEGA VMU (or two, because the screen is kickass in two player games) and a 4x Memory Card for the big storage.

If you want the VGA adapter, which goes into your monitor or maybe that wega, there is a good one for like $13...

Thanks everyone. 🙂

Seph, the WEGA is NOT an HDTV, just a regular ol' TV...that wipes the floor with everything else. 😉

You need 2 VMU's. Get, like the other Seph said, a Sega one with the LCD, and a big one with no screen. One Sega VMU will get you NOTHING...one NFL2K1 file fits on the entire VMU.
Yes, you need one...at least one, then get the big memory card. I don't think the rumble pack is good for anything, but that's personal preference. I have a Generic S-Video on my Panasonic TV, and it is excellent

Well you can play minigames on the unit. Plus nearly every game displays stuff on the screen while you are playing. Sometimes its important things you might need (for Resident Evil: Code Veronica it displays your health, which is cool) and other games its just a logo.

Some games will let you download little games that you can play on the VMU by itself...like you take it in your pocket or something and play the little game. Also on some sports games, IE NFL2k1, it lets you call your plays and stuff on the VMU so that the other player(s) can't see which play you're trying to call. And Virtua Tennis, although this is pretty pointless, asctually lets you see whats going on in the game on your VMU, so if you desired...you could play on your VMU by its lonesome.

And you can't use just a regular S-Video cable so far as I know...because the Sega cable has to actually connect the (proprietary) connector on the back of the DC and turn that into the S-Video input. You could buy it from somewhere like MadCatz or Interact as a third party, it might be cheaper than the Sega one. But...I don't *think* that jus a regular Mo S-Video cable (like the kind you'd use for any A/ qeuipment) would work.

And finally...I think that EBWorld deal is pretty good. Personally what I'd buy is the DC, 2nd controller, two VMUs, a Jump Pack...and then maybe find one of those 4x or 8x VMUs without the screen....just MO.

Another thing...you guys who are talking about the 3rd party VMUs, can you say which brand you bought and how yours is(was)? I'm curious to see which ones you've had good/bad experiences with.

koni, cool, well, I'll start with 1 VMU and a memory card. This is my money, not my parents. Now, this wouldn't be a problem if I hadn't just set up a 13 month CD with almost all of my cash (I only kept about $220). So I'll probably be down around $50 until Hanukkah, then I'll keep one of the checks from one of my grandparents instead of putting it into the bank like normal. 🙂

when will people learn not to buy third party memory devices for psx/dc/n64/whatever? THEY LOSE DATA, end of story.

'sides, the screen is kinda nifty and a few games like, almost use it 🙂

i have an 800 block memory card!! so if i were u i would go for the 800 block memory card you will be sastisfied with how much stuuf u can save with it!!!!

Ummm...if I get a Toshiba SD1600, Panasonic DVD-RV30, or Pioneer DV333 DVD player, how will I connect both the DVD player and the Dreamcast to my TV using SVideo (I probably won't be getting the Wega until after the XMas holiday rush)? Is there an SVideo input on DVD players so I can hook the DC into the DVD player and the DVD player into the TV?

😕

EDIT: Picture of the back of the Pioneer DV333

Do I connect the RCA cables into the DVD player and then from there the SVideo goes to the TV? Ummm...will it look as good even though RCA cables are used for part of the way? 😕

Don't get any Sega controllers, they're too cramped. Don't bother with a VMU, there's only a few games for it and they suck; get the 4x memory card.
