Dreamcast or N64

The girlfriends sister-in-law is planning on getting her kids a N64 for christmas. My question is, would it be better to get a dreamcast for $50 or the N64 for around $70? I'm really not sure how much the N64 cost, but I think I'm close. The only advantage that I can see for N64 is that it will be easier to get games for it. I went to blockbuster tonight, to get a game for the dreamcast I bought today, and they didn't have any, but they did have N64 games for rent.

1. Which is the better console?
2. How long will dreamcast games be on store shelves?
3. Same for N64, how long will those games be around now that the game cube is out? (I think the game cube is out)
4. Which has the cheaper games?

Any other questions I didn't ask? Before this dreamcast I bought today, the last console I had was an intellivison, so you can be sure that I'm a newbie when it comes to these things. I'm all into PC games, but the consoles just never seemed to do it for me.

Dreamcast, some good games
N64 some good games
both have about the same selection, and both won't have any more games made for them (i think nintendo is going to focus all their attention to the gc now) which is sad, the n64 had potential, it is sooooo much better looking than a playstation
i own a n64, but i say buy a dc

Usually I would pick Dreamcast over N64. but in this case, since this is for kids, I'd go with N64

Yeah, I'd say N64 as well. There are so many quality games aimed specially for kids.
As to which is the better console... N64 is more established (gamewise) but the graphics on Dreamcast are waay ahead. Dreamcasts are being phased out and cleared off of shelves thus the 50 dollar price. But the games will linger around a bit.
Which has the cheaper games? Well, you can get good deals on either system if you buy used games...

I have both because you NEED both, really. Dreamcast is much more modern and powerful and is priced oh-so-low, but N64 has some real standouts like Mario64, the two Zeldas, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, WaveRace64...all games you just have to play. Both the Dreamcast and N64 will have games on store shelves for a long time at speciality stores like gamestop...they still sell used NES cartridges! Dreamcast has the cheaper games because they come on the affordable CD format; N64's cartridges are expensive.

If could only buy one now, I'd get the Dreamcast and buy a N64 later (say, a year from now), when it becomes even cheaper. However, since you are buying for kids and not yourself, Nintendo is an appealing choice. Dreamcast has a good amount of games for older teenagers/adults but N64 has the pre-teen/early teen market all to itself.

N64 over DC unless the kids are 12+ years old. in that case, the DC would be better.

Sounds like the N64 is the way to go. They are like 4 and 6 years old. I'm sure they would be really hard on the CDs for the dreamcast. Thanks for all the input. I guess I'll just tell her to go ahead and get the N64.

On a completely unrelated note, that 1 gig of free downloads from giganews.com sure doesn't last long.
