For years I've been hearing folks laud DT and since they usually listen to the same music I do I finally gave them a shot. I've been listening to their music and it's just rather weak. The singers voice is annoying and high pitched and they generally don't rock out nearly as much as I was hoping they would. I know it might seem like I'm approaching from the wrong angle, and i might be which is why I'm turning to ATOT for some song/album recommendations.

For what it's worth, I've recently been "re-exposed" to Pull Me Under through GH:WT and i enjoy that tune alot (I even got past his whiny voice.) Anything else they produce like that?

Thanks!

6:00 is their singer's least wussy vocal performance, so you might like that song. Actually, Awake as a whole is probably their most 'rock out'-worthy album.

They have quite a few songs that are definitely rock out worthy. Keep listening.

I've only listened to their more recent albums but I like:

The Answer Lies Within
Octavarium
The Dark Eternal Night
The beginning of "In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 2"
The Root of All Evil

There's nothing wrong with LaBrie's voice. But then, I listen to Rush, too.

Listen to later stuff, their last 3 albums have seen them go in a heavier direction. They grew on me slowly, I liked a few songs at first, then a few more, then eventually realized they're one of my favorite bands.

Some of my favorites:

Under a Glass Moon
Blind Faith
This Dying Soul
Glass Prison

I could go on, but I'm lazy.

(Then again, I can't think of a song by DT that I don't like...)

Here's how it usually goes with me:

1. Listen to CD by band
2. Decide if I like it or not
3. If yes, get more of their music
4. If no, move on to something else

Why do you feel you're supposed to like Dream Theatre?

Your philosophy is flawed, listen to songs from multiple albums on youtube, find your favorite one and buy, then decide.

I never got past the "wow that sounds hard to play" stage with DT. They're excellent musicians, but there's much better music out there IMO.

Thanks for telling me how to listen to music. I can't believe I've been doing it wrong all these years.

I once was lost, but now am found!

Sarcasm doesn't make my point less valid, try actually giving a reason why your right then just being dismissive and you might earn your opinions some respect.

Well, to be honest, I really don't care if you respect my opinion. I can listen to and search out new music however I damn well please.

And how am I supposed to give a reason as to why I'm "right"? It's completely subjective, there is no "right" or "wrong".

Good music basically needs two important qualities: Technical/Musicality side and the Emotional side.

DT are amazing musicians but they lack emotional power IMO. Shoving 10,000 notes in 1 min doesn't do much for me.

Because thats what you do in a discussion, don't recommend a method of trying music if you don't give a good reason why it's a good method of trying music.

So you're going to completely ignore the fact that it's subjective and that "good method" could mean anything?

OK, I get it, you want a massively detailed explanation of how I search out new music and a 10 page paper on why it's a good method. I've failed to mention up to this point that my original 4 step plan posted above was FREAKING TRUNCATED. So, to appease you and your elitist ways, here you go:

1. Go on iTunes every month or so and check out the new releases in the genres that I like
2. Listen to new stuff from artists I know and check out any of the "You may also be interested in..." type stuff
3. If I find a song from a previously unknown artist that I like, I'll listen to other songs from that release
4. If I like more songs from the release, I'll check out the artists other releases
5. If I like the artist's body of work, I'll then go into the "You may also be interested in..." section of that artist's page
6. I'll then spend the rest of my days wondering if videogames101 approves of my methods. If he does not, I will end myself.

My 10 page paper will be on your desk Monday morning. I'd turn it in today, but I'm too busy not finding music because apparently I have no idea how to do that and should not advise others on how to do so.

You sound angry, are caps really necessary?Anyways, I just lost ore respect for you because you use Itunes, but I guess you don't want my respect anyways, right?

Anyways, Confining your search just to Itunes new releases is a kind of limited field anyways, so I'd still disagree.

And i'm not an elitist, I just would rather know more true things than false things.

Try the albums "Scenes From a Memory", "Awake", and "Images and Words". I don't care too much for anything after Scenes (2000, IIRC).

I use caps on 2 words and that makes me angry? LOL, okay buddy.

Explain to me what's wrong with using iTunes? Go ahead, give me a good reason. I'd love to hear it. I find tons of great new music on iTunes. Note I said "I" and not "everybody". Oh, and show me where I said I only use iTunes? I use last.fm as well. But you're probably going to tell me that's crap, too. Please tell me where to find music! I have no clue!

You sure seem to have an elitist attitude to me. You feel as if your methods for finding music are superior to mine, and they are not. I'd prove it, but like I said, it's IMPOSSIBLE (sorry, there I go getting angry again) to prove because it's entirely subjective. Some people roam used music stores and buy random CDs and find music they like. Sounds like a stupid way to look for music, but if it works for that person, more power to them.

Your move, music god.

Itunes is bloated, thats why it's terrible.

Also, an objective test for methods of discovering music is number of enjoyable songs found per day, vs cost of finding them vs. time spent finding them. It's not subjective, there are good and bad ways to find songs you find enjoyable.

And btw, If you haven't figured it out by now, I'm just contradicting whatever you say, because I really don't listen to much music at all.

(In fact, if you really want to know, all I really use is Pandora...)
