Dream Theater: Train of Thought

well, it's obviously their heaviest album, DT were no doubt trying to reach out to more of a metal audience. For me, it ranks just outside my top five albums by them (IaW, Scenes from a Memory, Awake, 6DoIT, Octavarium, from 1st-5th)

but like you said, yeah there are definitely some sick musical moments:

-- outro keyboard/guitar unison of This Dying Soul
-- main guitar solo in Stream of Consciousness
-- outro of In the Name of God
 
Excellent album. "Honor Thy Father" is arguably my favorite DT song, and I've been a fan from the early days of Images and Words.

wtf is 6DoIT?

IaW is pretty awesome, but I find it's a bit slow for me. I get tired of hearing James Labrie's voice sometimes.

 
ah I see. I still need to pick up their new album. During ProgNation 2008, they had a montage right before their encore with some ridiculous (in an odd way) mario thing with "The Dark Eternal Night" as background music. that song is sick as fuuuuuck.

I wish I could've gone to one of their concerts this year.
 
This CD is just meh.. petrucci's tone suffers greatly pairing a C tuned 7 string with a dual rectifier (road king).. pure sludge/mud. I'm glad he went back to the Mark series after this album. The riffs on this CD are pretty sick, I can only imagine how much better they'd sound if he didn't use that mud box of an amp for it.

Also LaBrie ruins this CD by trying to sound hard when singing... musically it is pretty fucking good though.
 
Easily one of their worst. The songs are way too long for their own good and This Dying Soul is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. Images & Words and Awake slaughter it.
 
I like it, but it doesn't really have much character. My favorite album by far is SDoIT CD2, followed closely by Metropolis Pt. 2: SfaM, then Octavarium. Then after that it's a wash.
 
ToT is good. I enjoy it. Lots of great, heavy riffs; As I Am, the beginning of the instrumental section in Endless Sacrifice and the opening to In the Name of God. I think Stream of Consciousness is also good.

I think JP's guitar sound is fine for the album. He was going for a more modern sound and it works.

Maybe that's why I enjoy it so much; I really dig that heavier sound.
