Now I just realized I forgot to check for one last item: round cable vs regular cable!!

First: they have so many of them. Not sure which one to get. Does it matter or should I just buy whatever brand I first look at?
Second: Two persons told me the round cables are no good. you may lost data.

I went to several website and none of them think this is true. So it is really true or not?

Here are the websites if you are interested:

I don't think it really matters what brand rounded cables you buy (like there is very many). And I never had data lost, and I have 36 in rounded cables (twice as long as it should be). I would just go for the cheapest cool looking ones you can get after you calculate in shipping. Of course, the store rating also matters...

Edit------
Bought mine from here

So here I am. SO damn happy. Got all the parts, put them all together, except the power supply. Wanted to check which way on the fans is in and out... and realized the power supply doesn't work. Hmm... use the power supply of my dad computer... change power supply cord... click on the button on the back... make sure it is 115... After a few tests, I realized this was really true. First time ever a power supply doesn't work. Oh man...

I hope that the only thing that doesn't work

while my set-up is far to extreme or not practical for most people it is 99% silent, (will be totally silent when I finally get around to isolating the near silent HDD's).

Zero Fan Zone

If you are stuck with fan cooling then low voltage Papst fans are supposed to be the quietest. On the PSU the Enermax 550watt has two fans and the later versions a manual fan speed control and wont struggle to run most systems without getting hot. If you are not overclocking a Zalaman "flower" heatsink with a low speed fan and some low speed case fans will probably work, (depending on CPU & ambient). Also for very near silent hdd's get the Seagate Barracuda IV's (7200) in 40GB or less. The system wont be silent, (at least not by my definition), but you should be able to get a pretty high spec PC to similar sound levels of, say an old Intel P2 system.

Check out these sites for some good additional info on the quest for silent computing..........

$25 in cable and putting the comp in the garage can yield similar results:)

$25 in cable and putting the comp in the garage can yield similar results:)

That kind of reminds me of a girlfriend ages back, her solution to any weird noises coming from her car was to turn the car stereo up a few notches
rolleye.gif
, had the desired effect ....... kind of, but hardly an "engineering solution" as you are not solving the PC noise just hiding it.

I'm sure it could be made to work well depending on where your garage is, mines about 150 feet away so I'd need a truck load of cables :D It has other drawbacks, like pain in the ass burning CD's, playing DVD's, copying floppies, and if you are trying to do something at the keyboard / monitor while watching or tweaking the PC. It's also considered bad practice to extend monitor cabling, as it usually degrades the signal quality. I personally like my PC sitting next to me making no sound :)

I don't now much about fans except the basics. But I want to comment on other components.

For the Quitest CDRW Drive Go for
Sony
LG Electronics
...quietest writing/reading operations

For the Quietest DVD
Pioneer 16x DVD 106S (Slot)

Hard Drives
My new Western Digital is so much quieter than my IBM hard drive
Seagate is quiet to average, maxtor is just average.

...right now, most of my noise is coming from my PSU, so watch out for that.

Hey I was just meesin" with ya. Great stuff. I actaully am using the 7 volt solution you linked to for case fans and have a PCPC silencer 475 powersupply. My garage solution is only possible solution if you keyboard had power on and some external devices like cdrw and as you say the garage or spare bedroom is relativly close.:)
Unfortunatly my garage is also many feet away.
