DDR2 is old now so those prices have gone up a little. DDR3, what the op is talking about, is used by Intel, AMD, etc... so memory makers are making more of it and prices are dropping.

Only if you buy used. DDR2 prices are not going to fall as much as DDR3 prices because it is going out of production. Reference DDR prices for examples.

Heh, I might do that as well. I probably bought around 10 sets of 4GB DDR2 kits leading up to when pricing bottomed out because it seemed like every couple weeks there was a hotter deal than before, so I kept buying. Ended up using a lot of the stuff myself (even put 8GB in a WinXP machine and used a 4.5GB RAM drive for swap :awe: ) and selling a few kits to friends after pricing went up. Made a tiny profit (why not?) but saved my friends a LOT of money.

Indeed. In 2008 I bought 8GB of DDR2 800Mhz Corsair for under $80 including tax. Buying memory even when you don't need it when the price is rock bottom is amazing.

I picked up 10 sticks of 2GB DDR2-800 ECC unbuf for $35 ea, then I picked up 10 more for $30 ea. So I still have something like 30GB of DDR2. I doubt the price on DDR2 is going to fall that low, although now that I've bought it, it probably will.

Larry, is DDR2 ECC ram compatible in non-ECC boards? I remember them not being compatible in my s939 build, but not so sure with DDR2 / EP45 chipset.

What lesson did you learn?

That was a transition between memory standards that we aren't experiencing today (between DDR2 and DDR3). Also, there was a lot of excess product on the market for a while.


We will be with DDR3 standard for a while still so that leaves plenty of time for it to remain the same price, go up and go down. Reading that short article should make you think that the transition to cheaper production would make DDR3 drop even further. Buying a large amount of ram (beyond what you need) at this time seems foolish.


I picked up multiple sets of DDR2 4GB between $10! and $25. We are nowhere near that.

Prices have been dropping like a brick for 4GB DIMMS.

Currently we are at $144.99 for a 8 GB (2x 4GB) 1066 set.

Here is the 4GB DIMM thread where we were tracking prices previously. (Notice the quick drop in prices over a 6 month span. On 2-9-2010 we were at $379.99 for a 8GB 1066 set, but that same set was $179.99 on 7-29-2010).
