Saw a city pickup truck outside of our house with a hose hooked up to the fire hydrant spewing water all into the street. He's been out there for about 30 mins and the water is still gushing. Is it a system flush or something?

most cities will flush hydrants regularly. some do it when they see a build up of particles in specific areas. its normal for most places, if you have lived there for a long time and havent seen it, they probably dont do it as often as they should. the water in those lines gets very stagnant unless flushed and moved regularly.

I guess my county just didn't care enough at our old house. Lived there for nearly 8 years with a hydrant in our front yard and never seen this being done before.

We've lived here about 3 months, so this is the first time I've witnessed it.

It's too flippin' hot to deal with grass seed right now. Yard will be aerated/reseeded in the fall.

it may be an area thing. here in az, ive written programs to control systems and backflow the hydrant lines without ever tapping them. some cities make it a yearly thing, others will let it go until a problem is reported.

The fire departments here do this from time to time.

I'm not sure exactly why they flush the lines...but they do.

I think they flushed the hydrant line across the street from us last year.

Does a couple of things: cleans out some of the sediment and also tests the function of the hydrant. Those valves break/stick/wear out and fighting a fire is not the time to find out.
Our company has repaired them in the past.
