Dragoncon - My costume project

This will be my first Dragoncon or any kind of convention for that matter I have ever attended. I am not sure what to expect so maybe some of you can chime in as to what is going to happen. My wife is very excited about going and some other friends of ours. I am going because I hear there are hot chicks dressed up in scant clothing 😀

Anyways, I am going to dress up as Bender for various reasons but the main reason, I can drink beer and get away with it in public. So, thus said, I need costume help. I have never made a costume before (nothing fancy). I have access to a welder, cutting torch, etc... the basic metal work tools. Was thinking about using a keg for the torso but maybe it will be a little too heavy. I want to keep this thread alive and promise to show my progress (as well as the finished product at Dragoncon).

I would use cardboard, aluminium, wire framing, painted plastic/rubber trashcan etc..etc..
I wouldn't use anything heavy like steel.

I am afraid that I will get bored quick, I am not that big of a nerd. I am going to make another costume for one of the days. It is going to be a Star Trek costume that is wrong in every way so it will mess with the Trekkies. I might carry a light saber with it as well 🙂

Looking into this a little more, it appears that the costume will need to be made of fiberglass and some type of moldable plastic. Thinking about doing a wireframe out of chicken wire and covering that in fiberglass strips (like you would a canoe) and then covering that in a plastic of some sorts.
