Dragon Ball Z nerds, I need your help

Cheesy as it is, I have to give Dragonball / DBZ / GT credit for being a series that takes Goku from a little kid up through being a grandfather.

But I've only seen the original DBZ not the Kai version, so I have no idea where you should jump in with DBZ.

You are not even watching it right! The Kai and TV series are modified or edited from the real ones, making it more shorter by cutting scenes to make it more fast pace, removing damage, blood, gore, and sexual references...

You should go rent or buy the real ones with the Japenese language unedited ones with English Subtitles. They have the special edition Funamation DVDs that have both the English Dubbed and Japanese versions too (Japenese is more violent and unedited).

The Anime Series are like this:

Dragon Ball = When Goku is a Kid

Dragon Ball Z = goes from when Goku first introduces his kid Gohan, becomes a Super Saiyan, all the way up until the end of the Buu Saga when Goku learns how to perform Fusion and becomes Super Saiyan 3

Dragon Ball GT = focus on Goku's granddaughter Pan (Gohan's and Videl's daughter) with a grown up Trunks, and Goku gets shrunk to a little kid hunting for Evil Dragons due to corruption of the Dragon Balls... and ends when Goku becomes Super Saiyan 4

I am probably one of the most hardcore Dragon Ball fan on this forum...

I actually prefer Dragonball over Dragonball Z because it wasn't nearly as focused on fighting... at the beginning at least. It's almost like Toriyama was still transitioning from Dr. Slump as the beginning of Dragonball is a bit more perverse and silly. I was trying to find the scene on YouTube, but all I can find are rips from the dub... blech. It's from the first episode where Goku realizes that Bulma doesn't have balls.

Just think... this is a kid's show. :p

Don't. If I could have warned you up front I would have told you to stop after Frieza. Buu saga is pretty bad IMO and it only gets worse with GT.

Technically dbz was suppose to end at freeza but if you must, finish with cell and kai preferably. Buu just drags itself out too much to be entertaining nowdays.

I enjoy a variety of film and TV shows, from Kieslowski's Decalogue to Clive Owen in Shoot 'Em Up.

In anime, DB / DBZ is just dumb fun, like the old Shaw Brothers Chinese sword and sorcery movies, more modern HK films like The Heroic Trio, or Japanese live action like Hard Revenge Milly.

I say you're still giving it too much credit. It's 97% time-filling internal monologue about strength and power levels and "how the heck am I gonna beat this guy?"

Seriously though, just read the manga and skip the anime. Even Kai is riddled with filler crap and it only gets worse the further up you go the series. Kai started well by following the manga pacing closely (very little fillers), but once the Frieza saga is past, the fillers just got really bad. You could skip 2-3 episodes and still easily follow the plot.

p.s. I watched it out of my childhood memories of reading the manga from start to end. I'd rate Kai badly if I did not already like DBZ from reading the manga.

i loved DBZ. jumped on my couch when goku went SSJ for the 1st time.

don't like kai though. re-editing = fine. redub = no no. i know some scenes so well that everything feels wrong due to the new dubs. especially the 1st ascension against frieza.

sad but i have every movie and every ep of the show :eek:

afaik there were 16 sagas no? saiyan saga up to kid buu saga?

Yep, this.

Future Trunks is arguably one of the best characters of the entire DBZ series too. He's the only one who is actually even remotely fucking reasonable at times. Everyone else is pathetically stupid... The future trunks movie is also pretty great.

Watching the show now though, it all kinda sucks.

A real dbz fan would never watch the dubbed shit that came from dbz kai sub or go home.

I used to love watching the show in elementary school, but when we'd be doing that and my dad was working out in the gym room, he'd hear it and walk in, taking his shirt off and blocking the TV flexing his arms and pecs, eyes rolling to the back of his head screaming "AAAAAHHH!! MY ULTIMATE POWER!!!!!" and it just embarrassed me.
