Dragon Age Combat Tactics

I'm not sure I really like this system. Is there any way to set up a tactic for you mage to use any/all spells against a target? Or can you only select specfic spells?

I'm also not liking this system too much. I haven't done much gaming in 5+ years - so maybe I'm not up to date or something but I feel like I'm just watching my party fight while we are in combat. And with other characters in my party from the get-go; I feel like my character is kinda meaningless.

Why in the world would you want to do that? That is a recipe for failure. Are you that afraid of the minimal thought it takes to decide what spell to use?

Then don't use tactics, and manually control every character (like the old days).

Whether or not your main character is meaningless depends on if you are bad at deciding on a build for you main. My main was a tank, and a damn good one at that. Everyone else was just DPS.

I use tactics only do the basic stuff - have the party healer autoheal when people drop below X% health, and have my tank taunt and bash and stuff like that to get attention off of lower HP party members. My fourth party member is usually a mage tweaked to deal damage, so I have them cast their best spell against whomever the tank is fighting.

That's one or two tactics each per party member. Really, though, I'm stopping the battle every couple of seconds to cycle around and issue commands to everybody.

As long as you set basic tactics for people to heal themselves/use health pots when they're low on HP you should be pretty o.k. I also set my mages to use their point-blank area stun spell when they get surrounded by X number of enemies. Really comes in handy, and means less micro-managing from me.
