Dr. Seuss political cartoons racist or not?

there are some things to consider about the cartoons. most importantly that they depict our then enemies.
does that excuse the use of racial stereo-types?
no.
does it explain it?
yes.
but, again, because they were our enemies (in terms of japan, a lot of americans felt truly betrayed) i doubt anyone really cared. or even today would think too much on it.

and about the indians: stereotypes also help in defining icons for cartoonists. which feed into those stereotypes...but the very nature of cartoons/comics demands the ease of icons. again, it explains the use without excusing it. im sure if you looked up some info on scott mccloud, he might have some interesting stuff published on the subject.

http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/speccoll/dspolitic/Frame.htm notice the rat-like teeth, beedy eyes, sparce moustache, and snub nose

If it wasn't for the fact that Suess' cartoon were based upon someones actual appearance I might actually agree with you. To call someone racist due to your own ignorance however is something I don't condone.

General Hideki Tojo

Don't be so quick to judge.

"Oh, gee, Hilter looks so Hitlerish; Tojo looks so Japanese. That's racist." You people are fscking idiots. Those aren't stereotypes or racism, they are actual depictions of real people done up in cartoonish style.
