So, an individual that shops at a retail clothes store is a "lemming?" I would like to draw to your attention that both of those brands you've mentioned have been popular for decades. Should the OP wait until they are unpopular to be safe, or should he simply shop at another, unheard of, retail store to avoid your scorn? Perhaps he should start making his own clothes?
Variety is the spice of life. I bet 50+% of people in his exact same position (young, freshly out of college or still in college) are wearing the exact same brands with the exact same styles (frumpy slighly wrinkled non-dress khakis, casual buttoned striped shirt, and Dr Martens). If he wishes to shop at only the trendy popular stores, he could still try a different style.
Still the Gap, but a classy looking, non-lemming choice that few people in his situation probably have.
There are millions of stores in the world with quality merchandise, yet he restricts his store choices to just a handful. There are millions of styles, yet he restricts his style choices to just the one style. There is a whole world of wonderful-looking quality clothing available. Try to be unique once is all I'm arguing.
There are those who lead in the wrong direction (a bad choice for a job). There are those who lead in a new exiting direction (a good choice for a job). And there are those who follow.
