reading that it looks like its a D200 clone and not a real competitor to the D300, looks like a great camera for the price however i feel many were expecting more

Phil has a production Sony A700 and pre-production D300 in his hands but did not compare them. Kind of sad.

I am sure the A700 & D300 reviews will compare to the 40D though.

well its not like Phils canon bias isnt well known, would have been nice to see it compaired to a camera that was a bit newer tho

Going by specs. alone (as there isn't yet review of a production D300) I see the A700 & the 40D as pretty close competitors technically (albeit street prices atm are pretty different) but the D300 as being noticeably above both.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Nikon bringing out a "D90" to compete more headon with the 40D.

Yeah, the Canon 40D and the Sony A700 seem to slot between the D300 and D80. The prices are in line with that, appropriately. The D300 is really a D2X, D3, and D200, all wrapped up into one body. It's going to take me a long time to save up for it, though.

I don't think that anyone has any idea what Nikon will do next. D3X for studio photography? D90 or D80x to compete with 30D/A700?

my predictions

nikon D80s at PMA in january, along with a 20+ MP FF model)

canon 5D mk II and 7D (both FF), along with 450D at PMA in january

K100D Super replacement at PMA in january (maybe, who knows what hoya will let them do, and pentax is a little slow getting stuff out the door)

sony A900 (FF) at PMA in january (mostly the same sensor as the nikon model)

@ElFenix:
The Nikon D3's sensor is designed and made entirely in-house. I don't know if Nikon's agreement with Sony is bidirectional.

My 40D purchase is a few months away. I can't wait.
And dammit Pentax, we need more models.

i know. sony has developed a FF sensor, though, and i suspect nikon will use it or one similar to it. i could be wrong.

Eh, if Sony has a high-resolution FF sensor, then Nikon will most likely put that in a D3X or something of the like. D300x maybe?

It's designed inhouse but I'm pretty certain that Nikon don't have a fab.
I would strongly suspect that Sony are doing the fab.

yeah, i'm guessing that at the moment sony isn't keenly interested in having a high speed sports photography sensor and is more interested in a higher res studio/advanced amateur sensor.

as sony now has the capability to do single pass 35 mm sensors i wouldn't be surprised to see a $2000-$2500 FF A900 from them along the lines of a 5D, but with higher res.

i'd like to see a proper pro-level DX/APS-C crop body in a compact chassis from canon ala D300, but i doubt it will happen. too close to 1D territory.

i'm going to guess that a 5D mk II will get the new 640x480 screen and have contrast detect autofocus using the 17 mp main sensor (which the digic 3 processor already has the routines for, so no reason they can't inexpensively implement it). a 7D would also have contrast detect, but may keep the less expensive screen and the 12 mp resolution from the current 5D. (it would be a new single pass sensor rather than the current 3 pass sensor)
