DPAD question

Fullmetal Chocobo

Okay, new question. Is anyone else having problems uploading results? It won't connect, and this isn't the first time. I've noticed it happening quite a bit lately.

If you have any significant Mpts accumulated under just "Fullmetal Chocobo" then you can get Stephen to merge them with your new TeAm ID.
There is a specific Merge my Points thread in the DPAD forums.

ps, I looked at your PC specs. Looks like you may edit video with that beast. All those scratch disks must be good for something.

I ask because that is what I do as a hobby. Not enough free time to make money at it. Mini-DV editing in Premiere Pro takes a lot of disk space.

Fullmetal Chocobo, I hope you don't mind me asking a question here too.

What is the best way to run on dual-CPU w/HT computers:

1. One client with four threads?

2. Two clients with two threads each?

3. Four clients with one thread each?

4. Somehow else?

EDIT: Stats can be found here: TeAm stats

I hate Premiere. Granted, I don't know the program, so it is a biased point of view, but there is stuff I have to edit and make my home videos that is just so much easier. But I do a lot of video editing and computer rendering / animation normally. As of right now, my machine is more of a Guild Wars machine (my wife plays now all the time). So after she gets her gaming machine built in a month, I'm getting a Quadro FX 2000 or 3000, and it's back to rendering for me. And yes, I do video editing and image editing too. All as a hobby and all.

I've messed with doing different setups (by way of running the programs, and then setting their affinity to a specific processor). Works rather well, but I ended up running one client on all threads. But you have to use the command line versions and not the "pretty" ones. I just like to have my machine crunching numbers, which is what I did in SETI classic until they killed it.

Do they have something like SetiSpy to monitor progress? How often is that status page updated? Just wondering. Thanks.

Just for sh!ts and giggles, here's the pics of my machine.. I figured ya'll might appreciate them.

There are monitors and viewers. Check at DPAD web or in this thread.
There are links to more stats in that thread too.

It seems that the stats have not updated in several hours. I thought they usually update more often.

I would still like an answer from an "Oldtimer" to previous post question 🙂

Are you referring to running one client on four threads, or four clients on each thread for a duallie with HT?

If you have four different projects that you would like to run, then putting each one on it's own processor (by setting affinity manually for each process) works well. Me, I've always prefer to set the machine to one task, and have it run on all four threads @ 100%. Nothing like seeing all four processors at 100%.

Plus, you don't have the overhead of the program itself running four times. While the effect might me minute, it is still there. I'd rather have one instance of the program with it running on one of the processors, and then remaining of it, plus 3 full procs crunching the data.

My guess is that you don't just casually pick that monster up and move it around the house.

How does your RAID5 array performance compare to your RAID0 (not just benchmarking, but "feel") ?

and - welcome to the DPAD TeAm. Free-DC seems to think they are going to catch us by Christmas 2006. Your setup will make that less likely. Got any friends with similar rigs?

Nah, the 160 pound weight of the machine kinda makes it a limiting factor for LAN parties. 🙂 I've noticed a difference in switching from a single disk to RAID 0 (two disk) for my boot drive, but other than that, I really don't have a comparison. I've done benchmarks, but never did a full install to compare RAID 0 vs. RAID 5. I'd prefer RAID 5 over RAID 0 if at all possible though.

Nah, I don't know anyone around here (physically), and only a few on the forums. I'll have my wifes future machine (one month to completion) running it though. 🙂 I'll see what I can do to get some people on the team. 🙂

That's your answer 😀

Thanks Zbox 🙂

Another question: In the v4.4 column at this stats page what is listed?
I suspect it is hours, and if so, is it because of multi-threading that my hours are many, many times what I have run?

I have no idea what all the numbers mean, but atleast I'm finally listed on the page!! Woohoo. And my wife is wondering how I knew that she has been playing Guild Wars for 4 hours (she turned it off). LOL. I told her I was just good like that. 😀

Also, is v4.4 faster than v4.3?

Welcome to TA DPAD Fullmetal Chocobo 😀

Nice rig you have their!😎 ,what CPUs are they?

I recently built a rig for friend ,an Opteron 146 @2.85GHz 😀 ,of course I tested it out with several days of DPAD 😉.I don't know its output as I wasn't able to monitor it with Muon Cockpit as I've got network problems 🙁.
Like you I used to run S@H1 & find monitoring monitoring DPAD machine stats somewhat vague ,I wish I had something like SETIQ to monitor various machines output.

Oh btw ,I play Guild wars too ,tell ya wife to look out for 'The Assimilator' 😉

What position are you in the team?

Here are the specs for my machine.

Currently position 37, and it would be more if the wife would quit playing Guild Wars when I'm at work. But that's okay. I'll catch up soon enough. And I'll let the wife know to look out for you in GW. She's more likely to see you than I (she's got 9 characters, I've got 2).

v4.4 is slower however it is much more optimized to produce better yields. I took a pretty decent performance hit when going to v4.4 over v4.3, but it's worth it to be able to produce meaningful results for the project.

edit:
as for the numbers under the columns.

v4.x refers to the number of simulations you have ran from that version of the client.

How often does this program upload results to the server? I've been digging through the config file, but can't find anything related.

It usually does so once your results.txt file exceeds 100kb.

🙂

Ahhh. Okay. I've been trying to notice a pattern with the results.dat file. No wonder. I was studying the wrong file. Okay, thanks.

Ah simulations! That explains it, I have a no-net box that has run from scratch and never connected to get better sample files. I suppose I should add some by hand?

Heheh ,your already ahead of me darn it! 😉
Btw 11 chars in GW? ,does that mean you've got 3 accounts!:Q

Yep. One normal, and the wife liked the game, so we went to buy another. Figured we might as well get the collectors edition (just for sparklies), and it didn't work. Ended up that Gamestop gave us the wrong stuff, so we went back, and they gave us the right stuff. So we ended up with three accounts, while paying for two, and one of the accounts is with the sparlies. 🙂
