Ok -

CkG mentioned that my file comes in with a "box" instead of carriage return. Why? I don't know. I'm using notepad on a Win2KPro system, and it looks fine to me... and works on my Win98 machines as well.

Just a possibility, but he knows how to 'fix' it - if that's the problem.

actually it comes from the fact it was sent to my hotmail acct. hotmail turns it into a .txt instead of .dat and puts those in. I setup OE to get my hotmail and it works just fine - but the http hotmail hoses the files you send. kinda weird but avoidable.

*edit* actually to make it easier can u just send me ur results.dat as a .txt file b/c i have NO idea where the offending results are that are causing my crashing so i have to replace the entire thing...thanks

Ok - check your inbox. You'll likely not care about the (old) ones. ;)

The "box"es mean the file is in UNIX format. If it doesn't have the boxes there's about a 50/50 chance you need dos2unix, on a Linux box or from CygWin.

My favorite editor for UNIX files in Windows is GVim, in case you need one.

OK... I'll bite.

Q. So how does my Win2KPro machine format a file with notepad into a Unix format?

Color me confused, but in over a decade using MS products, I've never seen this aberration. :D

MSN Hotmail has a unix server? :p HAHAHAHA!!!
What ever converted 'sandyresults.dat' to sandyresults.txt on hotmail must be unix then or it is somewhere because there is no unix stuff on my end.

Yeah, some high-volume routers, and whatever else run a mini varient Linux/Unix (not that a router could convert files). And a SUN UNIX server isn't too much of a streach even for M$.

BTW, I have found problems using notepad. It can't do some of the full lines (notepad overload

), and will wrap them even with word wrap off. I use wordpad, and make sure it saves as text.

Notepad doesn't re-format it. If it is that way, the DPAD client made it that way. Though Notepad occasionally strips *all* newlines from such a file for no reason.

DPAD wouldn't be the first to do so (though I've not confirmed that it does format its files in UNIX format). If you're still running SETI, take a look at the .sah files. They are all in UNIX format. I always assumed this was to confuse would-be cheaters, but things I do with CygWin tend toward UNIX format, too.

a quick solution for the future dan, would be to always open it in wordpad instead of notebook, it acts alittle better ;)

I guess I still find it odd that I'd not see it on this end. I routinely swap the files off to Win98 machines.

I never liked Wordpad much. It's such a memory hog, I got used to always using notepad, just because it's quicker and slimmer. Too much like MSWord. When all I want to do is edit ASCII text, it seemed like using a ball-peen hammer to pound in a nail. ;)
