DPAD: I think I'm giving up...

This new version is just too buggy. I've got two files on one of my computers, that manualsend has hung each time trying to send. Now it appears as though there is no way to send the backlog. So, it's done a whole bunch of work for nothing.

Since dnet is useless now, I think I'm going to have to switch to SETI. Sucks because I was doing so well at v4.21b.

<shakes fist> Damn you, v431b! Damn you!</shakes fist>

Sorry that DPAD didn't work out for you :( It always sucks when you run a project that doesn't give you the results you want :(

From the sounds of "Since dnet is useless now, I think I'm going to have to switch to SETI", you may not like to be working on Seti. We'd love to have you on the Seventeen or Bust team, if you wish to come with us :) We'll be very grateful of the help, and you can help us get to first :)

There are lots of useful projects you could do besides SETI. I'm doing D2OL right now (or rather tomorrow when they get their server back up.) They are searching for drugs to treat people already infected with Anthrax, Ebola, Smallpox, and now SARS. Another project using the client, Community TSC, is searching for a cure for a childhood disease. See the genetic link in my sig for D2OL.

You should just do what some others of us do, when a project enters a transitional stage, just rotate onto one of the many others that you have done work for or believe is worthwhile.
I always visit this site from time to time to look for new up-and-coming projects.

ya, i know what you feel...

I had all my fleet at work down for 3 and a half days because of those stupid errors...

I'm gonna give it a little more time, since apparently Sthephen is on holidays...

but after this week, if the client doesn't improve, i'm moving to other areas...

Cheers

Not trying to impose/pimp too much (tho it is me :p), but you may wish to think about maybe doing what some other people are doing, which is to run another client in the background, on the lowest possible priority, then if the main project cannot get work, or errors out, then the second project kicks in, and means your computer doesn't go idle, and is helping out TA in some way.

Seventeen or Bust, with MathGuy's Service Handler, set to use the True Idle (-x) parameter, will allow you to do this. :)

Just something to ponder :)

Seriously, I am really sorry that things didn't work out with you and DPAD :(

I'm doing the same thing Confused is doing. Well, it's different projects, but when my favorite began to struggle a bit, I put a second client on the machines for another project so if either one craps out, the other still works.

for me, it is sharing Distributed Folding (<- my home and favorite project, but preparing for a major client overhaul) and Folding @ Home
a similar project with a client that is very respectful and shares resources well.

Good Luck to ya..... If you keep exploring, you'll find the project that fits you like a glove :)

I dunno. I really liked how I was near the top of the stats for production in DPAD. :)

Does anyone know how to send the old DPAD queues? I'm serious, I've got two days worth of production that manualsend won't (send).

I really did like DPAD, but these bugs are driving me up the wall crazy!

BTW, is anyone else scheduling manualsend to run in the background? To send the progress at set intervals?

I echo what Confused & Insidious said. I'm a D2OL-er... with the recent server upgrades, I ran my main project at full tilt with SoB running at idle (not the 'true' idle') so that when the D2OL client ran out of work, the SoB client took over. A very hands-off solution to making sure your machines keep working for the TeAm one way or another! :)

I used to do that with Folding@Home, as the servers could be somewhat unreliable, but of late (for almost the past year) the F@H client has been working fine enough that any other projects wouldn't have had a chance. I guess that means that I just need to get more computers. :p

dammit guys!

running dpad v 4.31b (and ran v 4.31 and v 4.31a) on my 1.2 ghz tbird, 450 mhz p-3 450, friends p4 1.8 ghz....smooth as silk on all machines...w/ all the versions..

just remember. this is STILL BETA!!!!

this is the scientists changing around some stuff based upon PRELIMINARY results ....v 5 is the big deal.. that will most likely be the big, cumulative, end-all, *run this from now on until a major upgrade* version...just letting u guys know. i'm still sticking w/ it b/c i really like the idea of this project. and stephen responds to user comments in the forums nearly instantaneously...

if not i dunno what i might migrate to.

i liked how SOB was set up a LOT...d20l i've heard only bad things about (then again there are the exceptions), dont wanna do seti, TSC has promise, enough ppl are on UD overall (besides its *ending* relatively soon)

What other client out there can be left alone just to work and improve upon itself based upon prior results? not only is DPAD a fine project but the way the program works is pretty nice as well. you can conceivably leave it alone forever ;)

are there any other projects out there such as this?

Overkiller, I personally understand your point! ;) From what I've seen/heard of it, it sounds a good project!

Hence why I have been suggesting that a second project is run alongside, in case of drop-offs in service of the main client. I personally think it would be good if everyone did this, as it would prevent machines from going dry (for those projects that don't have queueing/caching programs) and will still help out the TeAm. And, hence why I have been, in all but my first post, been suggetsing running another project alongside (SoB in my case, partly due to the fact that I'm team leader, so i do kinda have to pimp the project ;))

I may even set up DPAD as the 2nd on my machines to SoB, to do it the other way! :)

like i said. i like the interface, cleient, and stats system in SOB so it would be a worthy pr0ject to run. then again dpad is a small community w/ pretty easy access to stephen brooks and we are in the beta phase still so...let's see where it goes ;)

as long as my systems crunch something beneficial!
