walking among business people, etc...

little did i know you walk among the weirdest people in LA county (homeless people, dudes blasting their crappy rap songs tryin to cell a crappy single, etc)

also...

it's by far the dirtiest downtown i've ever been to (been to chicago, arizona, san jose) with the smell of urine being everywhere.

food is crappy as well.

i already knew about the traffic, but anyhow just a forewarning for those who are ignorant (as i was).

bottom line: downtown LA is a smelly location.

I always laugh when people's dreams of LA are shattered when they see the reality.

I grew up just north of there in the Valley, BTW.

I go to cathedral high school in downtown LA (catholic school, it's on wiki). Whenever I go there to buy something, there's always a homeless black man looking for some change (they are pretty crazy), or some jobless mexican asking for a yob. Also, try not to look rich because one of the freshman of last year almost got shanked for his ipod. Finally, the china town magazine vendors will sell you a copy of hustler no matter what. You can be eight for all they care.

you obviously haven't been to downtown San Francisco if you think LA is dirty and has a lot of homeless people

LA sucks, I hate going there for very long.

The only thing it has going for it is decent weather and the ocean.

The city of LA is a buisness city. There is no reason to go there unless you're going there for buisness or a sports game. If you want to see stuff, head in virtually any other direction.

i laugh whenever i hear people talk about their hopes of seeing downtown LA.
Most people are used to downtowns that are teaming with life, with shops and restaurants to spend time in during the day, and nightlife full of bars.
The only time downtown LA comes to life is the 8-9am rush hour, 12-1pm for lunch when everyone leaves their offices, and the 3-4 rush hour. After 5pm, downtown LA is as dead as a doornail.
I think if the Staples Center wasn´t in downtown, most people would NEVER end up going there.

You were expecting to see gaggles of tall blondes with giant fake breasts walking around in skimpy clothing?

I didn't think San Francisco was so bad. Didn't get into the Tenderloin though.

But, man. Weird that the Castro District was nicest I saw off of the hill. Well.... OK maybe that's not so weird.

Ya Downtown itself gets pretty boring and has no real night life you have to go to Hollywood for the clubs and bars. They are building a new area right across the street from the Staples Center that looks interesting.

There's also that huge development coming down the pipe on Grand Ave. Combined with all the new buildings, residential conversions, and retail opening up, downtown will be quite a different place in another few years... minus the homeless situation. That'll take the entire county's cooperation and investment to solve. Otherwise, the homeless will simply continue to be pushed a little east and a little south as gentrification encroaches.

I think you must have been imagining something like downtown Beverly Hills. Thats where you should have gone :)

I live in Oregon and Downtown Portland is really nice in most places. Some super nice and ritzy like down by the pearl district or waterfront park.
