Downstairs Toilet Bubbling

Whenever we flush the toilet upstairs, one big air bubble comes out of the downstairs toilet.

Normally when it starts doing this, its time to empty the septic tank. I did this last week. Cost was $260.

Unfortunately it did not resolve the bubbling issue.

I did a test by filling up the upstairs bathtub to the rim and emptying it. It drained normally with no bubbles coming out of the downstairs toilet. Just a bit of water movement in the bowl. There was no water backing up.

I suspect the air vent on the roof might be clogged.

Any ideas?

This would be my guess.

Actually, the vent pipe going to the roof is hooked up to the top of the stack. When the toilet is flushed my guess is that it sucks the air into the vent.

If it was plugged, I don't think it would cause the downstairs toilet to bubble.

Now the toilet upstairs is a newer model and flushes very quickly. This would make the problem worse.

I might have some kind of partial obstruction between the septic tank and the house plumbing below the toilets.

Looks like it's time to open the cleanout and put the snake to it.

Now the last time I was doing plumbing in the house, one of the kid used the upstair toilet and flushed it. Now that was a shower I could have done without. LOL

Put a small snake through the line to the septic tank. No difference.

Step 1: Turn off the water. :hmm:

Def sounds like a clogged roof vent.

One way you can test is take a water hose and stick in the roof vent. Turn the water on. You may be able to break free the clog with just water.

I had bubbling in toilet when I did laundry.
I ended up having new external pipe access in backyard. After that same problem. Had to dig it up and replace a crushed pipe that connected to street sewer.
It was only $2000 to stop bubbling.

It drained normally meaning that you do not have a plugged vent, other wise it would drain slowly and the vacuum may suck a P-trap empty.

Try running a snake down the vent to the septic tank, or go through a clean out on the stack.

Sewer line itself to me it sounds getting plugged.

I get that now and then here, mine isn't crushed just badly ran, and have some root issues.

Or to the Septic tank it sounds.

I will experiment with the snake and putting water in the vent tomorrow.

First I have to fix the tall step ladder.

I ran the drain auger trough the pipe between the house and the septic tank. There is some kind of hard to get through spot at 25 ft and another spot at 29 ft that I can't go through. The second obstruction is most likely the inlet T.

The downstair toilet keeps on bubbling.

I am not sure what to do next, instal an extra vent pipe between the toilets outlets, dig out the septic tank and get in there to find out what's going on....D:, call a plumber?

Got the issue resolved by adding a 2" vent pipe between the top of the stack and the stack below the downstair toilet.

Cost, $120. including the flat sewer rod :)

No golden shower to report this time.

Got to clean up my mess now.
