current memory usage right now (1 window open, no flash or anything like that, just normal HTML text):

93 MB!

WTF? can we bloated fvcking pig? that's like double the old version.
 
i used to, but even with the quick-start and all that, it's still considerably slower in actual operation than firefox (assuming you have enough memory).
 
mine is using 40mb.

on a side note, does anybody know how to get gmail notifier to work with firefox? with IE, the notifier would bring me to my inbox, but with FF, i have to manually log in everytime.

Your browser isn't bloated, or at least I don't think so.

Type into your URL bar:
about:cache

And tell me what it says.

Your browser will cache images, html, and such in RAM to keep things quick. The more RAM you have the more it's going to use. A person with very little ram will cache only a small amount in RAM.
 
I have mixed feelings about this version. While the new features are handy, it's crashing on me more than ever before and using a solid 100mb of memory right now (EDIT: out of 256, I wouldn't mind if it were out of 512 or more). My profile (which worked perfectly in 1.0PR) stops the browser from loading every second time, which is getting annoying. A new profile will fix it but that process is SO annoying :/

Sigh, I'm feeling a little disenchanted right now.
 
Try minimizing it, that will flush the cache IIRC.
Mine went from ~37 MB to 876 KB when minimized, then up to ~10 MB when maximized again.
 
I have 3 instances of firefox, 2 on anandtech, one on a blog site, and it was at 61mb, i minimized and it dropped to like 10mb, then when i unminimized all 3 i was at 21mb

*shrugs* i have 512 so i'm okay. It's using very little processor right now too.
 
Oh and that cache will be dropped if the memory is needed elsewhere.
FF is simply following the philosophy that "unused memory is wasted memory".
 

Mostly what your seeing is from the cache. The firefox uses memory and disk cache to store data you download.

After all the entire download of firefox is 4.7megs and that contains the entire browser...
 
did this happen before 1.0 ? I'm thinking maybe they should've tested it with us users first...

That sounds like a problem to me. I have 6 tabs open and am only using about 35Mb.

It's really important when you install a new Firefox that you totally delete your profile folder in "Documents and Settings/Application data". Just go in, backup bookmarks and usercontent.css, and delete the entire Mozilla folder after you've uninstalled the old Firefox. This has fixed any problem I've ever had with Firefox in the past and it's pretty quick and easy to do.

Unless you're one of the people who like to run "memory management" apps on Win2K because you know more about the VM system than Microsofts engineers 😉
 
well, i can see the logic in using a big cache I guess. it would speed things up and I have 1GB of memory so that may be why it's so willing to use lots. the number of tabs or windows I run has very little effect on memory usage, maybe only adding ~1 MB per tab/window.

i ran about:cache this morning on a fresh boot:

Memory cache device

Number of entries: 81
Maximum storage size: 31744 KiB
Storage in use: 1327 KiB
Inactive storage: 8 KiB

but current mem usage is 27 MB. I'd be curious what about:cache has to say for itself when firefox.exe is using more like 100 MB, so i'll keep an eye on it.
 
mine is only 36/28 (RAM/virtual) right now with 2 tabs open. 1 being AT.

I have 1 GB of memory at work and 512 at home .. never had a problem with firefox using too much.

wouldnt it start shifting the older cache files into swapfile or off into hdd stored cache anyway, before it became any sort of problem?

has anyone actually ran out of memory when surfing btw? :frown:
 
Plenty of web browsers to choose from here,I`m sure one will suit you,I`ve tried Firefox,Opera,Mozilla,now trying out Maxthon(use to be called MYIE2),great fun trying out new web broswers 🙂.
 
hmm i have never had any problems with firefox which is why i luv it so much.... i never have checked the amount of memory it uses..... i tend to have like 6 windows/instances open at once sometimes... maybe i should get into the habit of using those tabs.... i guess that 1gb of RAM is finally doing something....

i can't seem to find usercontent.css. can you provide a direct path? i looked all through the mozilla folder under application data. i assume that saves stuff like options you've changed?

It's a CSS stylesheet you can use to change the look and behavior of webpages.



*IMPORTANT*

Howto "fix" memory cache issues if you don't like it in firefox:

1. Type:
about:config
in your browser's URL bar.

2. In the "Filter" bar of the frame type in:
memory

It should filter out all entries except for one.
browser.cache.memory.enable

3. Right click on "true" hit "toggle" and set it to "false".

In my about:config

It went from:
Memory cache device

Number of entries: 614
Maximum storage size: 31744 KiB
Storage in use: 21579 KiB
Inactive storage: 18473 KiB

List Cache Entries
Disk cache device

Number of entries: 3448
Maximum storage size: 50000 KiB

This will reduce the memory footprint of your browser!!

NOTE: You generally don't want to do this! If you have a low memory machine the browser will not cache very much if at all! It WILL cause a performance hit if you disable it when you visit pages you just came from!

See if this fixes your memory "issues".

 
firefox caching is usless, its still slow as hell. Try opera, when you push the back button it really goes back, its instantaneous.
 
I WENT BACK TO IE. STILL KICKS ASS, FREE, FAST. SP2 SECURITY PROTECTION.
