Downloading problems....

My PC has recently started automatically downloading to temp folders. If I click on a link to download a file the download window pops up and says it's downloading into a "Temporary Folder". Well, let's say the file I'm downloading is a .zip file... when it finishes, WinZip automatically starts up and shows the file name at the top of the WinZip window, but there are no files.... ever. Every zip file I've tried to download since this started turns out the same. It downloads, WinZip starts and attempts to open the file, but the file it opens is always empty. I also can't figure out where these files are going. I've tried searching for the file name... no go. I've tried searching by file size in case the temp file is under a different name... nothing ever matches. I've tried manually searching several different temp files and I can never find the files. It's like they just download and then immediately disappear. It's not an issue with links that you can simply right-click and choose "Save Target As", but some links are simply .htm or .php forwarding links and "Save Target As" won't work.

I've obviously accidently changed a setting. How can I get it to start asking me again where I want to save the file?

Hmm...what browser are you using? IE? Does it also do that when you're using another browser such as Mozilla's Firebird or Firefox? It's probably downloading to a temp folder which is hidden. Try finding it by going into Windows explorer>Tools>View> and check Show hidden files and folders. Then look for your temp folder by going through the following folders by going to your drive C:>Documents and settings>"your login name folder">Local Settings>Temp and it's probably downloading them into there. Hope that helps.

It is just happening with IE. My hidden folders are already visible and I have searched several of them. The files just seem to be gone. How can I set IE back to asking me where the download should go?

Thanks.... X-Setup fixed my problem. It turns out that it wasn't an issue with the download directory, but rather .zip files had somehow ended up on the "silently executed" list... meaning that IE was trying to run .zip files without user intervention. X-Setup lets you add or remove file types from that list.
