downloaded files are "corrupted" most of the time, weird.

I just installed a fresh copy of windows, in my new computer, everything goes right, but Im having this issue with downloaded files. I think so far its only with .zip files, or .rar files. No matter what I use, whether windows unzip utility or winrar, when extracting files I get an error message, most of the time saying that the file is corrupt. Any idea why this would happen ? I tried extracting the files to different folders, opening inside winrar, and almost everything I could think of. Is there another unzip program ? or what could be causing this, thanks.
 
No not at all, but maybe the temperature of the computer is not at reccomended levels ?hmm, because I also had this problem while opening some highdefinition videos on the internet, one out of 3 times there was an error saying something about overload or something.

Whats the reccomended temperature for cps to work properly ? or varies between processors? I have an amd 64 4200 dual core, maybe Ill check the manual
 
I dont have a dedicated download accelerator, I use the one that firefox has and I also tried with the explorer one, both resulted in corrupted files.

i used to have some problems like that when i used an accelerator before.

are you running nvidia firewall ?
 
I had this problem with a bulid a few years ago, turned out to be a bad DIMM. Run Memtest86 and make sure your memory is okay.
 
When you press 'open' file from the Internet you get a corrupted archive error? Try clearing your cache (or not using IE).
 
I formatted the computer again and I keep having the same problem.

I do have nvidia firewall installed but it is inactive both when I download the files and when I extract them. Should I just delete it ? I also have a router, but I had it for some time and it never gave me any trouble.

When I was using my old computer the difference was that I didnt had windows firewall or nvidia firewall. I think this is what is causing the trouble, although I do turn them off when downloading.

The reason that I believe its the firewall causing this is because even at DIRECT2DRIVE.com in their trouble shoot they have something similar to my issue where files get corrupted. They recommend turning off the firewall, which I already did.

How can I erase windows firewall ?
 
Hmm, possibly the hard drive going bad, or even a bad mem stick as mentioned. Try running a few diagnostics. When I'm downloading rather large files I may get a corrupted .rar every once in a while that a redownload fixes, but that's pretty rare and it sounds like you're getting them quite often? Is it one file specifically, perhaps located on one server, or pretty much any type of compressed file you try to download from multiple sources?
 
It happens to almost every file I download. something weird will happen. For example yesterday I downloaded a 600 mbs compressed video and it worked fine. But then I try downloading 3dmark06 which comes in its own setup file and it failed almost at the end of the installation. I tried downloading demos from file planet and all of them failed for some reason. I purchased obvlivion at direct 2 drive and when unzipping it, at least two files where corrupted I havent been able to download a non corrupted file after 5 attempts. I was streaming a video and at the middle of the video there was an error saying: corrupted file blabla.

The thing is that this doesnt happen when I install stuff direct from cds. I installed a game that came with my video card, expand rally and it works perfect. I installed unreal tournament 2004 and it works perfect. I dont have any glitches or slow down in my computer. So thats what is making me think that the error is not ram or diskdrive (diskdrive is 5 months old) because if that would be the case, I wouldnt only have an error with downloaded files.

I need to get rid of firewalls but I cant find a way to uninstall them, both windows and nvidia firewalls.
 
Well there's no way to erase the Windows Firewall, but it can be disabled by going into the control panel > windows firewall > Off. Assuming you're using Windows XP. I'm really not sure how to disable the Nvidia firewall, maybe someone else can help you with that.
 
Hey, was just hunting through some old pages looking for a different topic and noticed this one. I read the title and immediately knew what your problem was.

It IS nvidia firewall. The crappiest piece of crap to ever crap... huh...

Yeah, in short, the only way to get rid of it is to reformat and not install it at all. I attempted to remove it multiple times and always had the corrupt files. The ONLY way to not have it is to completely reformat and not install it at all. Pain in the ass, I know, but trust me, you'll be much happier.

UNINSTALL NVIDIA FIREWALL NOW.
UNINSTALL NVIDIA FIREWALL NOW.

That will solve your problem

mine still installed, since i can browse just fine with it on, but i turn it off to download anything. i dont understand how they ****** it so much

On one side Im happy to know that I found out what is causing the problem but on the other side I dont want to format man, I need to get work done, I cant be formatting my computer every 10 days. It sucks to know that was causing the problem. Is there any other way to erase it ? thanks.
