perhaps you don't have the divx codec installed?
[edit] or another avi type codec. angelpoltarian, etc...

I'm not sure,

I downloaded 'the playa' divx player and it plays divx files fine. this file type is .scr.avi so does that make it divx?

Oh well, any more thoughts.

the problem is your DivX codec. i'll be back home at around midnight PST. PM me and i'll send it to you then if you haven't gotten a good one already.

I've downloaded and installed the 3.11 divx codec. I can play most anything else. Maybe the problem is with the downloaded file?

You do not have the correct codec installed.

On a side note why does everyone assume that if it is an .avi file that it is DiVX? I have a lot of .avi files that are not DiVX.

I'm having the same problems. I redownloaded DivX to no avail. What codec did you download that fixed it? According to MS's Knowledge Base (haha!) I am missing a registry key....

I uninstalled the 4.0 beta codec, then installed the 3.11's.

I also did a windows update to media player( and checked everything, about 5-10 megs of junk, some probably needed, some probably fluff)

Then rebooted and it all works.

What was weird was many avi's and divx worked, just this one didn't.

Alls well now.

OMFG!@ I posted the exact same problem yesterday. After trying various codecs and 5 programs (honestly) I now have to run my .avis by loading up windows movie maker and parsing out the clips, then running them from within movie maker :(
