Download updates but DO NOT notify?

I know Automatic Updates can download updates and notify the user when updates are available, but is there a way/tweak/hack to make it not notify users and just install them manually later? I'm just thinking of what a pain it is to download updates for users, but it's often more of a pain to troubleshoot when they install something themselves without reading it. I'm trying not to use Software Update Services, because it is still small scale.

How small scale? since that is what SUS was pretty much designed for.

You can have it scheduled to install the updates during off hours, but if you
want some control over which and when the updates actually get installed,
then you may want to reconsider using an automated update tool.
