Download saturating internet

Hi.

I have a problem I am struggling to get to the bottom of. Wonder if anyone has any suggestions.

I recently bought a D-Link DIR-600 router and a D-Link DSL-320b modem. Generally they are working fine. Just to explain, the reason I bought separate devices is because I initially planned to install DD-WRT or OpenWRT on the router which is not compatible with an integrated modem (well, DD-WRT anyway...). However both firmwares are not currently supported on this model! How annoying! Anyway thats another story!

Whenever I download a file, it seems to consume all available bandwidth, which causes any other connections to the internet to drop out. I've never seen this before and it certainly didn't happen on my old router. What could be different about this one to cause this?

Cheers.
James.

What speed of internet do you have and have you tried running a speedtest to see what your computer is saying you receive? If you only have like a 1mb dsl connection, this is likely what will happen. The router really has no way of throttling incoming connection speeds down very effectively.

As far as the ddwrt, you are aware on their website they have a link to a page that all you have to do is type in your router model # and it shows you if it's compatible or not?

I have rubbish ADSL, typically about 6 Mbps. This has not changed between routers and I still get that speed.

The internet connection is fine until I start a download and while that is running if I try to reload a webpage or open a new one it times out, but the second I stop the download all is well again!

I understand I can install software on my PC to throttle the bandwidth for downloads but this is not something I want to or should need to do!

Also, my downloads often hang at random times during the download and don't start again. They will start off ok and then suddenly it will stop transferring data. I have to cancel and restart, often doing the same over and over.

It is definitely a problem with either the router or the modem.

Btw, my pc is mid to high spec so that is not the issue either.

Yes I know about the DDWRT page. I looked at it before I bought the router but the one I bought is a newer hardware version which is currently not supported. Hopefully soon they will release support.

I would recommend starting with the modem. Connect your computer directly to the modem and try downloading something and see what happens with multiple downloads. Also - is your modem provided by your ISP or supported by your ISP? I'm not a big fan of dlink routers/modems at all so either one or both could be causing your issues. But the big thing is your modem, if it's not supported by your ISP, get a different modem that is supported fully by them.

I've not used D-Link before so I have no idea what they're like.

Yeah I was going to try that but I wanted to see if anyone could shed any light on specifically what it could be or is it that D-Link are generally rubbish.

No the modem is not provided by my ISP - it is off the shelf. It is an ADSL modem - industry standard. Same as my previous one.
