Download new drivers? I'm leaning toward 'no'

I built my PC two months ago. It's acted funny only a couple of times, and those probably related to Vista. But now Windows tells me I can DL new drivers for my mobo, video card and something else (can't remember). But I've read other posts in which a new driver actually causes problems. So I think it's better to not update any drivers. Sound reasonable?

heh, i'll have to agree. i continually try to better my computer until it just breaks and i get angry

I admire both your honesty(ies). But I've already put all the boxes, manuals, CDs, etc into the attic, and feel a moral duty to never touch them again. But if my pc starts acting really quirky, then maybe I'll do the download.

you'll want the full driver package for the manufacturer, microsoft will in most cases only mess things up. A few month ago microsoft put ATI drivers in it's automatic update line up and my All in wonder capture drivers got disabled, it took me awhile to figure that out and roll back. Also do research before deciding on a version of drivers to install when updating or installing in the first place.

Usually newer drivers are more polished and offer better performance, provided you avoid beta drivers. Download them from the manufacturer's offical website and not a third party.

graphics drivers i almost always just go ahead and update and keep the old driver predownloaded (on my backup drive with all the other drivers) if it doesn't work right i'll just roll back but out of 20 or so driver versions i've never had to roll back.

As for mobo drivers i will usually see just what is changed in my version vs the updated one. often times for me (dont oc dont really go into bios much) theres almost never any reason to update since it usually just fixes issues not related to me at all and doesn't effect performance. But yeah i usually use the windows update as my "update available" notice. I would never download the drivers from Microsoft but i will let them tell me a new version is out for me to look into 😛

I am somewhat in PurdueRy's camp. That's part of the fun of having a computer - keep pushing - onward and upward. 🙂
