So this morning it was the big panic because something to do with a CT machine was down, but everyone who wanted us to fix it refused to tell us WHAT was down, we just had to fix it ASAP.

After running around asking people in the CT dept and trying to figure out what is down it turns out they installed these two servers without going through IT... well, they're workstations, but they're acting as servers. Life critical etc... yet it's not sitting in our rack and not documented anywhere. Anyway we turn them on and everything works.

Then later the IT manager gives me crap for asking the user what was down. WTF. I just hate that guy, he's such an idiot. If I bring my car to a garage and tell them my tire is leaking air, they're going to want to know which one. Same idea. AAAAAAAAAAAARH. I just can't wait to leave this zoo. The left hand does not know that the right hand even exists.

/rant... ok I let it all out, feels better now.

Sounds like a real shithole. Employees being allowed to connect stuff to the network without IT's knowledge is a security breach waiting to happen.

Big time. If it was my choice we'd have port security. Pisses me off how every department does their own thing. There are servers all over the place that we support and we don't even know they exist until they go down. Some have even been bold enough to randomly pick an IP that they can't ping. IP conflicts can be a pita around here.

I have another job elsewhere (same company) but been waiting for months to move. Can't wait to get out of this sinking ship before something really bad happens where it requires a reload. If one of these rougue servers was to have a disk failure... oh boy. Oh and some people do raid.... 0...:\

can you escalate this to a higher up, say the CIO? document your findings, concerns. mention lack of IT procedure and security vulnerability. take initiative, make recommendations. be proactive, not reactive. this is your chance to prove yourself. you'll be a senior IT manager in no time

Red Squirrel, your sounding sexually frustrated and angry.

Try to have more sex, go with the flow, and relax.

Its only a job, there is no need in sounding so angry about it.

Yep that's the plan. I spoke with a union person today actually so they can try to speed up the process to get me out of there. I got accepted for a new job months ago but they have nobody to send to replace me so I've been stuck here. (the hospital is a customer, I work there as a contractor).

As far as escalation, because we're just contractors, we don't have a say into much. I've mentioned lot of stuff countless times and it just gets shrugged off. One of the things that has always bothered me is the fact that they have these universal accounts because people are too lazy to login/out so they just log in as this one account and do all their work from it. This account, which is used by most people, is also accessible through citrix, which is open to the outside world. Lot of shit like that. Don't get me started with autologons.

So yeah, my main goal is to just GTFO before an elephant turd hits a 3 phase hvac fan. It wont be pretty. :D

Tell the CIO that IT policy sucks and he's more likely to be unemployed than promoted. There's only one thing to do in an organization like that: abandon ship.

Policy comes from the top down. The last company where I was the IT Director, I couldn't get anything done. If it cost money, it wasn't going to happen. We were in break-fix mode and nothing was going to change that. Everything was done on a shoestring budget and I didn't have enough flexibility in the budget to reallocate anything as I saw fit. I was so happy to finally get laid off.

Since then the company has been evicted by one landlord (this company is a manufacturer, moving a manufacturing company is no small feat) the two owners have abandoned their personal homes, and they are down to a handful of employees. The owners were morons who couldn't see past the current month's numbers and everything ended up costing them more in the long run. They ran a company with great potential into the ground.

Sadly, yes lol. The place is a royal mess... well, I'd say 90% of the servers are in good hands, we have a decent vsphere environment, but it's these rogue life critical servers that are a big problem lol.

Jesus christ. That should be reported.

Why aren't you doing port security? That's pretty much a "no cost" addition as it's almost always built into even low end switches today. Sure, there's some management overhead and some policy changes to be written, but it's not like you're talking millions of dollars, unless you're running janky switches to boot.

had a nice It situation yesterday. for some reason no one could log into our seperate secure network. couple called in and after first being told it was fixed, finding out it wasn't and calling again, they finally managed to log on. but then the rest of us went to log in since it seemed fixed not...except the idiots were only fixing on a case by case basis so I had to place a call to, idiots.

They're probably not legally liable.

If a ventilator goes out, that looks to me to just be death by natural causes -- the person's inability to breathe.
If monitoring goes out and a person goes into cardiac arrest between rounds, again, death by natural causes. 86,400/7 monitoring is a luxury, not a requirement of medical professionals.

For the public's safety, please tell us which hospital this is so we don't mistakeingly go there for treatment.
