Douche in a GTO

lol. I just spent 20 minutes in a Youtube link-chain watching videos of morons at this Cars and Coffee thing in Houston...Seems like there's at least one crash at every event.

looks like a combo of lift-off oversteer and overcorrection

No, his rears just regained traction while he was still steered for drift. Instead of the rear-end continuing in the car's lateral drift right, it caught and transferred his lateral movement into a cornering load, sending him straight. Because he was steered right this shot his front that way and his back the other, and with a push from his rears from the remaining driveline inertia his rear tried to scrabble past his front.
Basically he went from drift to donut.

As Pinepig said, he lifted when he should've kept it planted. Just a second longer in the skid and he would've been centered.

Ultra high performance tires can really throw a car around.

That's hilarious. And it is even funnier that it happened to a GTO owner. I hate GTOs. They are awful looking, even before being wrapped around a tree.

Yep, it's a good thing they don't have traction control! With traction control comes...control!!! But it's good to be able to turn it completely off so that you can wrap your jelly bean around a tree.

Tank slapper?

Oh dear . . . Nice there's a cop right there directing traffic - that will help ensure he can't fool his insurance company into believing this was somehow an unavoidable accident.

Much as I dislike modern Pontiacs (which is a great deal), the GTO and G6 were very close to being appealing cars - if I could tweak them by 10% (part of which would be intended to make them more Holden-y and less Pontiac-y), they'd have been awesome. Leave it to GM to get that last 10% wrong, pretty much inevitably.

I've never understood the mentality behind thinking people who wreck their car playing around are "jerks" or "douches."

He was just having fun in his car with zero chance of hurting anybody else and it unfortunately ended badly.
