Doubling the speed of 100MBit LAN to 200MBit (2 NIC's)

How can I combine the speed of 2 NICs (also 2NICs on the other side)? Windows 2k shows 2 separate ethernet connections...
How can I bundle the speed of both for a virtual 200MBit network connection?

But most hardware can't even keep up to 100mbit speeds. A striped RAID array over 5 15k rpm hd's might take full advantage of 200mbit.
 
Just out of interest, what's it for?
Unless you're runnning a server and want some kind of load balancing, you're unlikely to get any benefits from using multiple NICs.

No it won't. Ping in have more to do with latency than anything else. A dirty line (interference, EMI, etc.) would increase this. 15ms is fine and for all intents and purposes you won't see anything better.

Which NIC's support coupling (I have Realtek 8139's)?
How is it done on software-side? Is it then one virtual 200MBit channel?
I heard that it's possible with Linux... How?

Intel NICs are apretty reliable and If I am correct, all ofthem support bonding(Or is it just the pro or server lines.....)


Ayyways, WInXP pro natively supports it. Just muddle through the network settings
 
Why do you need that kinda speed?

Also, Realtek NICS SUCK HORRIBLY! Very slow and use CPU lots, get new NICs you'd see an immediate improvement anyway.

Further, they probably dont support binding, thats kinda a high end thing

 
I agree with goosemaster, go with Intel nics for bonding.... 3Coms should be good too, but never used them for that purpose...

make sure that when Ur bonding them your hooking them up to a switch that will feed it

Definitely. HTe nICs have to support it..think of it as a pair of Voodoo's, and they want to be in SLI..same idea

RTL8139s are pretty much as cheap as you can get - Don't expect them to do anything fancy.
The intel Pro100 cards definitely support it under Win2K server, but I've never tried it with WinXP.
What are you going to do with that much bandwith anyway?
 
Do you currently have a 100mbps Hub then? a 100mbps Switch effectively runs at 200mbps because it's full duplex, could this not be an option, it would speed up the whole network.

Hubs and Switches can both run in Duplex mode if both NICs support it. Duplex doesnt give you a 200mbit pipe all of a sudden, it simply means that the PCs can transmit and receive at 100Mbit simoultaneously. This will allow 200mbit to be transmitted per second, but only 100 in each direction - it wont speed up one-way transfers significantly.
 
Here is a utility for Linux. FIREHOSE

It will run as fast as the total number of nics you can put in both transfering machines.
Haven't tried it personally, but it looks very nice for large file transfer. Make sure you
have SCSI RAID array though. I have yet to see 33MB/sec, sustained throughput, with IDE.
