generally that's how they work. never used a double sided DVD to burn in my life.

pressed DVDs from movie houses used to use double sided discs. One side widescreen and the other full screen.

mmm sounds good ;)

as for the double sided disks i wonder if you could use it with dvd shrink and not compress the data spliting it up like you were gona make two dvds and then burn the first dvd to one side and the second to the other side? Would this be playable in a standard dvd player like a component for a home theater system?

You would not need to recompress the video of a DVD-9. However, since a DVD player can only see one side at a time, you would have to reauthor the disc so that the movie is split in half. There's really no benefit to using a double sided disc compared to using two single sided discs.

Yeah, I've never seen them in stores either and just order them online. I've burned over 100 double sided Ritek DVD-R's without any trouble and that brand is nice and cheap as well. The latest stack I got had an extra ring close to the center and seems less compatible than usual - although all my new computers can handle the newer run, just not one of my old ones. Biggest benefit is your backups take up half as much room in terms of disc storage.
