A 3dmark score of over 8000 is impressive as the gf 6800NU gets around 8500 if run at stock speeds. I suspect that because of the 128-bit interface, the fill rate will be lower and the card might suffer at higher resolutions with AA & AF. This might casue the gf 6800NU to come down in price. If it does, I might end up selling the 9800Pro for it. Guess it all depends on how satisfied I am with the 9800Pro. You gotta admit $140 for it even used is a steal isn't it?
Yep it's a steal for a nice used card. ;)

And i believe we are to expect the 6600-AGP in October/November, Of course it's purpose is NOT to compete with the 6800 (even though it is at the bottom of the 'same class') - rather it is to BLOW AWAY the Radeon x600 (which i believe is based on the 9600p/xt) . . . and will probably eventually compete with the x700 (also due ~ oct/nov).

There are NO cards slated to compete with the 9800p . . . the 9800 series is destined to fade into oblivion . . . but what a great 2-year "run". :)

I'm a little worried now as the guy I'm buying the 9800 Pro from says that he is selling it because he did not have good results with the card in Star Wars Galaxies. This is specifically the game I am buying this card for. He said he often had lags in major cities. I would normally think that he didn't have enough RAM or something, but he seems to be a guy who doesn't skimp on hardware. He's now using the 6800GT and probably has over 1gb of RAM.

THose of you that have SWG and the 9800 pro, I need some advice here. Does it get choppy or lag in major cities? What causes this? Is it the video card at all?

again, i don't play these types of games . . . but i do know where there is too much "going on" - your screen is FULL of things and action . .. almost ANY system will slow . . . for a bit.

You can drop the resolution . . . for your type of game, more RAM (up to 2 GB) is the answer . . .and i guess even more important for that game than a faster GPU.

Some of the posters in THIS thread said they experience momentary slowdowns with the 9800p; i think you should try it for yourself and see what you think . .. IF you are dissatisfied in a couple of months, you should still be able to get 80-90% of what you paid for your 9800p. ;)

Don't give into "Buyers remorse" BEFORE you even try it . . . .

and please let us know your results.

There is a slight bit of lag in cities, but this is almost apparent with any vid card and SWG. Like I said before, the engine needs some work before it can really appeal/shine to those who are interested in such..make sure you have a gig of RAM at least.

I am 100% content with the Radeon 9800 Pro and SWG [with the appropriate settings], however. I'll do some screenshots in a little bit if ye wish. All in all I think it was a good purchase, but there is that little voice in the back of my mind wondering what it'd be like with a newer-generation card. You'll be fine if you throw on a VGA silencer and use some ATItool goodness methinks.

I quit playing SWG this spring, but before I did, I had a 9800P and 1gb RAM. Before that I had Ti4400 and 512 RAM. As people have stated before, RAM is huge in SWG. I noticed the largest increase in performance after upgrading to 1gb, so its good you plan on getting more RAM no matter what. After I bought the 9800P, performance did increase, but not as much as I had hoped. From what I read about the game, its nearly impossible to go lag-free in places like large cities. I remember seeing quotes from developers a long time ago, saying SWG is "too advanced" to look perfect with today's hardware and broadband technologies. Whether thats true or not is beyond me, but you should just know that you probably won't get the awesome graphics you are looking for in SWG.

it is advisable to wait just a bit longer - IF you can. ;)

prices are dropping as the new cards are more available and we also expect the 6600 from nVidia in October (s'pposed to get 8,000+ in 3dMark'03) for a MSRP of $199. Ati will have a 'competing' card - maybe cheaper by then.

At THAT point, you are probably going to see sub$150 9800p and the street-price of the 6800 and GT also drop a bit . . . of course, NOW you can get a 9800p for ~$180 in current Hot Deals

;)

It is ALWAYS advisable to wait a little bit longer if you can :p

Well I hope the guy I'm buying the card from doesn't mind me posting here what he said, but I won't mention his username so as to maintain his anonyminity.

Here's what he said when I asked him why he's selling his 9800Pro
"i was having trouble with SWG ( star wars galaxies), i dont really play FPS too much, works fine with DOOM3, but with MMORPG kinda lags due to many characters on screen @ once. I was able to play Doom3 death matches online just fine. "
I then asked him what his system specs were at the time and whether upgrading to geforce 6800gt helped. HIs response was:
at the time i was running a 2500+ xp, and a gig of ram. it was ok with all the eye candy set to medium but would lag a little when it got intense. the 6800gt handles it much better. the lowest i got with all the eye candy on was 22fps, though i now have a 3500+ a64. if you have an A64 w/ 9800pro, you shouldent have too much problem with graphic settings @ medium. but im not gonna lie the 6800gt is a world of difference. if you are no longer interested in the 9800pro then ill take it off pending status. thanks.
I forgot to ask him what resolution he was running the game at. I'll do that next. Those of you who posted specifically regarding SWG, it does seem to be a weird engine that is more dependent on overall system specs especially RAM. I think the 9800 Pro will be a big improvement over my geforce256 32mb ddr card as I cannot even move the mouse properly with this card.
