First of all, when you bite a chip or a vegetable or whatever, it's not like you stick the whole thing in your mouth- only the part that is bitten off is in your mouth.

Don't forget the portion of carrot between your lips and teeth, as well as the mid-day grime that sloughs off and transfers from your teeth to the carrot.
Second, when you do dip the chip or vegetable into the dip, the dip covers the area and sticks to the chip, covering the part of the food that may have saliva or germs on it. It's not you drop the chip into the dip and mix it in, it's like spraying a layer onto it. At no point does the stuff on the veggi mix directly with the dip that is remaining in the bowl.

Yes, it does mix and slough. Something as simple as osmotic pressure would almost assure it.
So what is the issue?
It's gross and unsanitary.

Same as if I breathe in your face while saliva shoots out of my mouth. You're telling me your saliva never reaches any other portion of what you're dipping and everything that touches your dipper leaves with it? Dip your carrot into a some black paint, then dip it into a cup of white paint. Is there any black paint left in the cup of white paint?

Every single thread of yours that I remember has been completely idiotic.

If you're double dipping in your own tub of dip, I could care less. Well, I would care if I ever had to actually meet you.

Double dipping. You know the drill. You?re at a party and there are chips and dip. You take a chip, put it in the dip and take a bite. So now you?re left with half a chip and no more dip. Back in it goes. I definitely don?t do this (I?m a little funny when it comes to germs to begin with, ask Nicholas), but forget us ? you need to be more wary of who else is doing it, especially if you?re at a function. On the episode, they had a series of dip bowls set up, each one for a different piece of the experiment. One was just one person putting the chip in, no double dipping. The next bowl was one person double dipping. And the last one ? well, it was a party in a bowl. On the one person double dipping bowl, there was tens of thousands of bacteria present. Now imagine how many there would be at the party bowl. Double blech.

What useless information. Bacteria is in your mouth anyways, what is the big deal.

Also bacteria != bad all the time.

Here is something to put it in perspective:

"In one mouth, the number of bacteria can easily exceed the number of people who live on Earth (more than 6 billion)," notes Sigmund Socransky, associate clinical professor of periodontology at Harvard.

The fiancee and I will double dip if it is just the two of us - to be frank we have swapped enough bodily fluids I don't think double dipping into the salsa is going to be the end of us.

Also there we have a close knit of friends and when the half dozen of us are out at a bar & grill or over at somebody's house then there is a tendency for double dipping to happen. We have all shared so many bites of foods, sips of drinks, or whatever I think we have developed immunities for each other's respective fauna of bacteria. Please note that there is not any sort of constant crazy amount of double dipping happening all over, just some double dipping here and there at times.

With all of that being said, if I was at a party (not a small gathering as noted above) or otherwise with people I am unfamiliar with I would never, ever double dip. I do think in those situations it is blatantly rude to do do so.

Some people hate to exercise their immune system. Exposure makes you more resistant.

You risk me spitting in your drink when you're not looking.

See that is a totally false analogy.

Don't care. I will spit in your drink.

Who double dips with strangers anyways? Normally if you are sharing the same food, it's a friend or family. The whole thing argument about germs is retarded. You have more germs on your steering wheel than your toilet seat. Oh no, never drive again guys!

If you are at a party sharing something like chips, everyone has most certainly had their drunk hands all over the food anyways so trying to be careful about the dip is just stupid.

Oh nohs my immune system has to fight something, heaven forbid guys!

If you have herpes or some other non-curable transmittable disease, then yes.

Otherwise I don't give a shit.

I have seen that a million times but just watching it now, it looks like George rotates the chip and dips in one of the sides that he didn't bite off.

So it's not that bad. :D

it's probably wouldn't kill someone, but if i want to swap spit with somebody i'd like to be able to choose that option.
