double click........CRASH!!!

Hello everybody.Please be nice to me, this is my first post.A few days ago I finished building my second computer.This one will be for games only.I had no problems from build to start-up.Everything is brand new.''I'll list everything at the bottom of the page.''
Boot up to Windows is fine no problem.But as soon as I double click on a icon Windows crashes and restarts.The OS,MOBO and GPU drivers were installed with no problems.I swapped HD's and MEMORY it still did not help.I'am sure this is a simple problem that I'am just missing.Your help would most greatful.Thank you.

It is possible that the BIOS is at fault. But I am going to doubt that and say that it is either one of two things:

1. Most likely he is experienceing the Clash between nFORCE 4 and Maxtor Hard Drives.
2. He has two pices of software or drivers that are confilicting. Try booting Windows in to safemode with networking and use it for a while and see if it happens again.

You do not need to Flash the CMOS, instead go in to the BIOS setup menu and find the option that says "Restore System Defaults" or something similar.

1) what kind of DDR400 (give a link if you can), and is it 2 x 1GB modules or 4 x 512MB modules?

2) is your ATX12V cable definitely hooked up? Sometimes that gets overlooked because the receptacle is up in the upper-left corner of the motherboard.

3) Raidmax ... generic-ish cheap PSU... hmmmm :frown:

4) Also, if your video card has a power receptacle on it, is that hooked up too?

5) It might be interesting to start the system in Safe Mode and (a) see if it still occurs, and (b) look at the Event Viewer logs (right-click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer)

Interesting point mechBgon, he should set all his bios options related to CPU and Memory to AUTO. His problem could be related to improper RAM timings.

Actually, my train of thought was partly that if he's got some fancy-pants RAM that's designed for 2.8 volts, and the A8N-E defaults to 2.6 volts, then it could be beneficial to raise the memory voltage to what the RAM is built for. So hopefully we can narrow down what sort of RAM it is.

First step should be to set Windows to stop with error message, instead of just restarting. Start/Help & Support, search phrase 'error' will produce a help topic indicating how to enable error reporting.

System is obviously on the ragged edge of stability. Some things to check:
- Unstable memory timings/command rate/Vdimm (test with Memtest)
- Vcore too low (test with Prime95 or SuperPi)
- Power supply (particularly 5V for drives)

Hello and thanks for the info and the kind words.Yes everything is hooked up and has power.MechBgon I'am using 2x1GB sticks of DDR400 by A-DATA.But I did swap them out and installed 2x1GB Kingston HyperX DDR400.There was no change.Googer I did restore system defaults,but it did not work also.I did not try a start up in safe made yet I will try when I get off work.I was thinking it might be a gpu driver issue.I think there was a problem with the ATI Catalyst not working well with Window XP SP2.Ati does gave a updated Catalyst driver for XP.
Do you think that might be the problem?Or still a possible hardware issue?Thanks again for all you time and help.
