I think a Via board is fine.. they're passively cooled and very stable. But I think you might consider another brand. Soltek has a stable Via board, Abit's board looks very good too.. but the Asus Via board got horrid reviews. If you research anandtech's forums here, you will see some very negative, almost disdainful comments on the Asus board.

Why get a case with a PSU when you plan on buying another PSU anyway?

REVISED!

MOBO
ASUS A8N-E Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

Good call on the Mobo, I double checked and yeah I think the A8N is better. Is it worth $50 more to upgrade to the deluxe? I don't plan to use SLI, so is there any advantage to the deluxe?

RAM
Kingston ValueRAM 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model KVR400X64C3AK2/1G - Retail

Will this RAM work for Dual Channel with the A8N?

Monitor

The Nu Technologies monitor was in a Anandtech 19" LCD comparison review, and did extremely well considering its price, and with a rebate right now on newegg its under $300, yeah the 25ms sucks, but again given its performance for its price, I think I can tolerate it.

Case
I would like to get a better case, but have a firm budget, and this computer has to sit next to Apple gear, so it has to look half-way decent. I couldn't find anything I liked without a power supply or without blowing my budget. Also the AMS gmono case got good reviews on other sites..

Thanks for everyones help! The nubie fog is starting to fad a bit!

Ditch the D-Link crud - go with Linksys instead.

So problematic, I've tried to work with some for other people, not worth the hassle. Their entire range of products is highly suspect in my eyes. There is a reason D-Link products have the lowest price tag.

Don't really see the point in buying a case with a PSU and then buying another PSU either. You don't need anything remotely close to a 460W PSU to power that system. Rather than buying both of those items which cost what, (about $120-130? combined), spend it all on a better case like an Antec that comes with a quality PSU. You'll probably end up spending less that way and get a better quality product as well.

How about

THERMALTAKE Tsunami VA3400SWA Silver Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 400W Power Supply - Retail

Seems to have some good reviews to it, what about the power supply then? I don't see anywhere on the Tsunami that the PSU has 24pins.. Is that going to be a problem?

Don't get that monitor, it will be pretty bad for gaming. Instead, wait for one of dell's monitor deals and buy the Ultra Sharp FP1905 19" monitor for under 300 instead. Probably going to be a much better monitor.

Why are you getting kingston ram? It's cas3(slow), the corsiar vs cas 2.5 is better.

I think this case(or the black/silver version) is cool for the money.

I think this monitor is better for the price(although 17").

For 19" dvi lcds around $300, here.

They're 12ms, 12ms, and 16ms respectively.
Personally, I like the second one(the fuji) the best.

Best pick:

Thanks for the help... the Dell 1905 is on Dell.com for 335 w/free ship.. I gotta read the fine print... but I think that is the way I will go...

The ram, the Cosiar VS isn't dual channel.. is that big deal? is there one that would work better in the same price range??

The Dell 1905 can be found cheaper from other retailers. Buying stuff from official site is always more expensive.

The Crossair VS does say Dual Channel doesn't it in its names?
Well you can try to find OCZ, Geil

My corsair vs(the exact stuff in the link in my post above) is running in dual channel on my nforce 4 ultra board. Or is the dual channel problem an asus problem with this ram? Where did anyone get that this memory isn't dual channel?

What mobo are you using ?

If I recall it wasn't a Asus problem or a Nforce problem but rather a problem with VIA chipsets not playing nice with some Corsair memory.

Asus A8N-E PDF Manual: Maybe it's a mistake in the manual
