DOT considering peanut ban on flights

Why do we always wait for bad things to happen before we do something? We can foresee a problem, why not just eliminate it now instead of waiting for either someone to die or a plane full of people to be inconvenienced?

well.. in that case... we should just stop all airline travel. eventually a plane is going to crash, whether from natural or un-natural causes, ... but... why wait? why inconvenience 120 people with death.. when that can be prevented now. and while we're at it... lets ban automotive travel, and rail travel. do you know how many people die each year from transportation accidents? we can prevent that too..
better yet... lets ban birth! we can stop birth defects by removing the birth portion!

I do. You're one of those maroons who only thinks in black and white terms. It's the mark of the lower end of the IQ scale, and very common amongst conspiracy theorists and alternative medicine dingbats.
"Look, someone died of the flu and therefore the flu vaccine is useless and shouldn't be distributed!"
"Hey, the government didn't do everything they could to stop 9/11, therefore the government conspired to murder those people!"
"Peanuts cause death. Airplane crashes cause death. Therefore they are perfectly equivalent."

The answer to this absurd argument is not difficult to arrive at if you put in more than 0.5 seconds of concentrated thought - it's a simple cost/benefit problem. The drawback of serving something other than peanuts is.... peanuts (metaphorically, for the slow among us). The drawback of never using air travel again is massive.

Common sense: not that common.

I loved this when I heard about it the first time. I was on a plane, and they handed out pretzles and explained that they were helping people that are allergic to peanuts by not having them on the plane.

Then I remembered wheat allergy.

Then somebody with wheat allergy complained.

Some people are allergic to water. I'm gonna go on a water strike for a year to promote a law to ban all water. It's only fair.

How long have they been flying airplanes with peanuts on board?
How many people have died or had a sever enough reaction to cause a plane to divert?

I cannot find one instance. None and no documented reactions other than mild discomfort.

Where's the beef? Post a link. Anything.

It might happen is not good enough IMO.

(1a) If anyone says yes.... NO PEANUTS ON THAT FLIGHT
(1b) If everyone says No... serve peanuts as normal

this is good.. cuz... i think this is what many airlines actually sorta do right now.

I flew 3 times last year...on one flight prior to boarding, the flight attendant announced "we wish to inform our passengers that one passenger on this flight has a nut allergy. As such, we will not be serving peanuts on this flight, and ask all passengers to refrain from bringing any items on board which contain peanuts" ... noone said anything, noone complained, and nothing happened. i dont remember getting asked when booking my ticket, or checking in, but i suspect that the passenger had enough common sense to mention this to the ticketing agent at some point.

The life-threatening airborne argument is dubious at best, IMO. Those reactions are always less severe than direct ingestion. I don't think anyone will ever die or come close to dying from inhaling peanut dust on an airplane. However, I don't think they should still be serving them anyway because of possible accidental or intentional ingestion. I believe some people get fairly severe reactions from touching them too.

I haven't seen peanuts, or any nuts, in coach class for several years. Maybe it depends on the airline. They are often served in business or first class, though.

Or the airline could not be so GD stingy with the bleed air. More fresh air for the travelers health should win over the small percentage fuel saving the airline gets from having the air on hella recirculate.

I'd tend to agree with this, but it doesn't address:

1. Allergic Passengers whose original flight is delayed and get reassigned to another airline's flight. I have little faith that airlines who lose my luggage can transfer passenger information like this.

2. Passengers who bring their own Snickers bar on board.

If you're seriously inconvenienced because you can't have a tiny packet of peanuts for 3 hours, your life is just pathetic. Eat something else instead
