when windows is loading, it says something like "now restoring your previous version of dos.....could not find previous copies.....MSDOS startup failed"

i tried restarting in dos mode, and it just hangs

the ms-dos prompt, however, does work

any suggestions about what i should do? i need to restart in dos mode to use powerquest's drive image software....

Long time since I got to mess with win9.X, but try editing your autoexec.bat, or boot.ini, or any of those files tucked nicelly in your root partition, and REM any DOS entries...
