Dorm Room TV Question

Hey there,

I have a quick question.

My brother just went to Sams Club and picked up the first 200$ TV he could find. I told him to get the Sharp because people said the quality was nice, but instead he got a Sylvania 27" TV. It looks like CRAP!

I was wondering: I intend to do a few things with this tv:

1. Play Playstation 2 on it.
2. Watch TV on it.
3. Watch DVD / Divx / AVI on it.


I don't have a cable so I Can't test 1 or 2 yet, but as far as 3 goes it looks horrible. The colors are way off and the TV is in no way sharp.

If I were to get an Akai 27 inch TV (go to http://www.samsclub.com and search for Akai 27) that has 800 lines of resolution (and is flat) would that look much better for these purposes?


Please let me know ASAP - I need to make a decision ASAP so I can return this POS and get a decent TV.

I think that the Akai 27" is a Samsung rebadge. There are several threads at hot deals talking about the TV you are looking at. From what I heard, it's a pretty good TV (a lot better than what you got AFAIK).

What would be the best possible output for this tv? Should I get a DVI -> Component output adapter and hook it up to the component inputs on the AKAI?

Or should I use S-Video. This tv is such CRAP!

I'm not the least bit surprised. Sylvania TVs = total junk (and that's putting it nicely). My parents have one and it never worked right. The picture makes you think the TV is under water. The whole picture is wavy. I would never buy a Sylvania product worth over $10.

Using the akai/samsung in my dorm room right now. Its well worth the money.

So what would be better with this Akai TV:

Outputting video via my S-VIDEO out from my computer and into the S-Video In.

or

Outputting video via component (YPrPb) via the DVI output on my computer to the component inputs in the TV (which supports 480i).

Hmm?

Outputting via componet will give you better results but most likely you wont see any difference than using Svideo on a video display of that size.

Well my question, I suppose, is:

Is 480i a HDTV mode that's only available with component input, or is it as clean as "regualar" S-video?

480I is not HDTV, The difference between composite, componet and svideo is the way the video signal is carried over the cable. Composite carries over both black and white over one wire and is seperated by a comb filter in the set. Svideo carries the black and white on two seperate wires. Componet carries the red green and blue over seperate wires.

So the net result would be to use component or S-video. If component costs 30$ more than the TV, is it worth it.

Keep in mind what I'm doing with the TV / computer.

Also, I'm converting s-video to compisite right now. Is that a lot worse than S-Vid? Will getting a higher res. TV make it much better?
