I have heard that cell phones are, or can be cheaper to use than dorm room phones. I will be calling long distance often enough(few times a week prolly). Are there actually service plans that would be cheaper than just making calls from the dorm room? If so, and I assume there are, ideas?

Should prolly also add, just regualer use along wit that, cuz I'm sure they going to hit me up prdy hard with any calls that aren't made to other room phoness.

for us at Penn State, the dorm phone was provided for free. We just got cheap phone cards and phoned home like that. Now that we are in an apartment, all 3 of us have cell phones AND we have an apartment phone as well. Since we live far from where we go to school (i live in TX and go to school in PA) the area codes make most calls to us long distance. So we got the most basic land line we could, that way people wouldnt have to call us long distance.

Just go for the cell phone, dorm phones usually have some silly connection fee per month, like $10.

I live in a house, but I don't use the house line, I just have my cell phone. Long distance is free on it, if I don't go over my minutes, and I don't have to pay for two phones, and it forces everyone to call my cell phone which I always have on me. I hate people who know your cell number, but then call and leave a msg on your machine.... grrrr :|

Use a headset to keep the radiation to a minimum if you are going to use the cell alot.

Just get a phone card. The AT&T cards are the best deal hands down (don't believe the 1 cent/minute cards, there's usually some sort of 30 cent connection fee (cards sold by "units" usually have this fee, cards sold in dollar amounts don't usually, this isn't always the case so read the fine print). A cell phone is nice, but if you're trying to save money, you're better off going with phone cards and getting a good connection every time.

At my college, the dorm phone plans were like normal phones. Local calls were free, but long distance was billed at 25 cents/minute.

I would get a cell phone just because you probably won't be in your dorm all that much, so it's more convenient. It'll probably be more expensive than a dorm phone though.

Cell phone was the best, IMHO, pricewise and convienience-wise. Then I went and got one and discovered that, because of the metal structure of my apartment building or something, the phone WOULD NOT work in my home. I lived with it all year, but now I'm certainly going to have a land line for in town calls, or test out the phone beforehand where I'll use it most. Everywhere else, the phone worked excellently.

If you have room mates, I would suggest getting a cell phone. Make more sense and you can use whenever you want instead of appealing your crazy roomie to get off.
