Hey,

I am going to university in September and whether I want to live at home or in a dorm is going to be a big factor in where I want to go. I still need to wait to hear from all the places - here in Ontario we don't know until end of May / early June, but the ones I want are all pretty good schools so knowing this will help tip the scale. (note: money isn't a factor)

Dorm life seems like it could be awesome if you made some good friends or horrible if you didn't and your roommate was a jerk. Living at home, I'd have an hour commute but still have home cooked meals, my own room and bathroom, but is it a lot harder to meet new people? Both ways, getting an apartment with some friends seems like a good option after the first year or two.

Anyways, this is a big decision for me and I was hoping to get some input from computer guys like me who have done this already :) Is anyone really happy with their decision or regret it?

i believe it's very important to live in the dorms at least the first year. at least half of what you learn in undergrad is wortheless IMO, it's the social experience that is really important.

I would definitely live in the dorms. Lot's of fun and you make great friends. To me, it never seemed as if the commuters really belonged in my school. They were kind of considered outsiders.

And if you get tired of your roommates, at least you live close enough to go home for the weekend.

if you do the 1 hour commute, i suggest you make sure that your car can handle a year of that much travel.an hour commute is roughly 50 miles, right? 100 miles a day, times 5 days a week, times 30 weeks is 15,000 miles.

well I live in Toronto so for me it'd be 20 min driving to subway station and my dad could drop me off and the way to work

thats my concern Shmorq, I'm thinking if I stayed at home I would have to rely on friends from high school who also stay at home to have people to go out with on the weekends

Live in the dorm, dude, it's the best time you'll ever have in college! You'll have a chance to go home during the weekend and enjoy the perks of being at home.

i did that my first year. I lived at home. It sucked. It made school feel like a job. I lived in the dorms the next year. it was so much better to do that. Made friends, had a great time. My roommate and I weren't tight, but we got along just fine. It was a good situation all around. Don't live at home.

late.

well, dorms are cool, and suck. I got stuck with a paqnsy of a suite mate, but i usually hang out in another unit, which is more fun. If you dont like noise, dont stay in the dorms.

<< If you dont like noise, dont stay in the dorms. >>

So VERY true...

But dont let this discourage you, since hardly anyone studies in the dorms....they go to the library.....

You have to understand that a campus is a miniature city- ie. everythign you need is like 5 mins from you....And like some people have said, if you commute, you will feel like an outsider...

I haven't heard back from U of T yet but I don't think I will go there if I do get accepted. I have a friend who is there and all he does is work and I know I would too. I really like the sounds of Ryerson though. If I don't stay in Toronto then I need to decide between Western, Guelph, or McMaster (ya I applied everywhere :) ). I was thinking Guelph, but did you choose Western for any particular reason?

Western?....every person i have talked to who goes to western says its a GREAT school...yea, you might think they're biased, but I know people who go to other universities (ie. UofT) that say their universities sux....so that cant be good...lol..Plus, i heard the girls of Western are the best :) ...

But more seriously....Western has everything I want....its great for science, has a specific program i am looking for, etc etc....

Unlike the US, almost all of the Ontarian universities are equal, and have a GREAT level of education...

Btw, Western has a program similar to Harvard....I think its their business program...

Btw, I heard Mac is a really tight school....cant go wrong going there....

Another thing about mac...you can apply/get into med school with ANY undergrad degree...for example, if you studied music you could still get into mac's med school...lol

Come to western :) I hear they have a "girls of western" calendar :)

Definitely live in the dorms. You can't possibly get your full college experience if you live at home.....

Thanks for all the input!

Ya, that is sooo nice to know that most of the universities here are all fairly equal, takes a lot of the pressure off

I am doing computer science btw.

Go to the dorms. If money isn't a problem and you get a jerk roommate, you can always drive home. But being forced to drive an hour each way everyday will probably get old real quick, especially during finals.
