Just got through talking with a guy who knocked on the door saying he was trying to get to know the neighborhood and was doing some work to help him get his college degree and asked if I had a few minutes, I had no problem with that so I let him come inside. Then he started the sales pitch about how the more he sold the more points he gets towards his degree. He said I could donate some children s books to a local hospital and I said okay what does it cost and what hospital.

He then started telling me about how he just needed my name and address so I had no problem with that, I figured the company would contact me later and I could find out all the details, he filled out a form then told me that he now needed almost $150 in cash or check. I told him I didn't have either and he started asking if I could go to a ATM, I replied , nope, I don't do cash from ATM, I just use my card.

He then went into how filling out the form and not using it was going to cost him points and that couldn't I just give him part of the money. Or didn't I have a check from an old account that was no longer valid so he could just hand it in and get credit and then the check would bounce and nothing would be charged. By now I see scam all over this. The next thing the guy says he has a toothache and wants to know if I have any pain killers ? I offer him some Tylenol, he declines claiming he is allergic and hinting don't I have anything stronger. I tell him that I think it is time for him to go and he does.

Anyone run into these people before, seems to be common in cities, but this is a rural area so this is the first time I encountered one of them.
 
I lived in apartments off campus in college and these people were bad. We would get at least one a month. I would tell them that I was eating Ramen and taking public transportation to school - I didn't have money for their shitty magazines.

Since moving to the 'burbs I've only had them come by a couple of times. Both times they quickly left after seeing our two pits running to the front door after they rang the bell.
 
For future reference:

An unknown person knocking at your door = They want either your money or your soul, sometimes both.

We've had 'em all. Carpet cleaners, college students "just getting to know the area", guys that have copious amounts of meat in the back of their trucks for one reason or another, religious nutters, boy scouts, girl scouts, local HS football team kids, little leaguer's...

What I love is how pissed they get when I quietly shut the door in their face while they're still jabbering on about "5 rooms for the price of 1" or whatever it is they're saying.
 
i had a similar thing happen back in 06 or 05. The guy didn't go through all the playacting like you went through. He started with the same line about college and wanted to know if I wanted to buy magazines while he was at the door. Then he said if he could get some water and I gave him a bottle of water i think. Then he kinda had to call for a ride or something. He might have asked for some headache medicine or something. But, he never went inside the house.
 
You let him in your house? The ones I've seen are always super sketchy looking. They definitely don't get past the door.

This is a rural area and it is pouring down rain today, the guy was standing at the door with umbrella. This is a part of the country where people still don't lock there doors at night, there hasn't been a murder here in 20 years and not even a burglary in 5+ years so people are more accepting. Realize though we are not naive. The whole time I am talking with the guy he doesn't know that I have a desert eagle within reach anytime I want it. I don't live in my home in fear of people breaking in, I give everyone the benefit of a doubt until they show me otherwise.
 
look that shit up on ripoff report or whatever. common scam. you might actually get some magazines or whatever but they are way overpriced and none of those people are struggling college students or whatever...just scummy/shady sales people.
