i don't understand elevator doors. every time i press the Close Door button it takes like 10 seconds before it starts closing. do they not work like they supposed to?

several times today i pressed the Close Door button repeatedly to quickly get the door to close before others could get in. this one dude put his arm in the sensor freakin opened the door i had to reach out and pretend like i was going to hold it for him. this resulted in a 30 second awkward conversation about how nice the weather is followed by 15 seconds of awkward silence. care to share your elevator pet peeves?

I love it when an elevator actually works like it's supposed to. Push "door close", the door closes. Brilliant. If it's not hooked up to anything, DON'T INSTALL IT!

Ironically enough, my biggest elevator pet peeve would be people who won't hold the door for 2 seconds (or, on elevators its possible to do so, make the door close early) in a clear effort to avoid letting another person in.

If that's you, believe me, I don't want to talk to you either. I probably already think you're an ass, so just shut up, and let me think that silently, instead of forcing me to polite.

I just want to ride the elevator, same as you. In a sense, it's a form of public transportation, so you're going to have to ride with strangers once in a while. Get over it.

It's always hooked up, but in most elevators, it only functions in "fireman" mode. How it functions normally is a programmable option in the controller.

theres a lot of american elevators that are god awful slow. this one at the local school only goes between 2 floors, but it takes 45 seconds to do so. its crazy... most other elevators i can go 10 floors in that time.

How To Force an Elevator to Go Straight to Your Floor Without Picking Anyone Else Up:
1) Get in the elevator.
2) Decide which floor you want to go to.
3) Extend both index fingers.
4) Press the button for the floor that you want to go to, and the door close button at the same time, and hold them down for five seconds.
5) Laugh at all of the people that are waiting on an elevator while you go right past them.

I never said it was better or worse, just saying that's how most of the elevators in this country I visited operated which I felt was much better. Door operation wise.

You should have taken the elevator at my old job. Felt like a launch pad when it would take off. There were 8 of them, all lightning fast. I was never on the elevator more than 15 seconds and I was going up or down 18 floors.

move the furthest away from the button so if someone says hold it, start moving toward it but pretend you're too far to get to it in time. So I've heard.

I believe you're supposed to hold the button. Most people jab it until the door closes as it would have on its own. I always hold the button for a two-count or so and it seems to work.
