doomsday preppers: what's the best online source for emergency bulk food

Amazon MREs. You should be able to them for ~$8 per 1.3k calorie meal shipped. Make sure you get genuine military.
 
All you need is 72hr? Doomsday will last a lot longer than 72hrs.
If all you need is emergency storm preparedness meals then just stock up on extra soup, spam, canned veggies/fruits, beef jerky, peanut butter, trail mix and rice in your pantry. Then get a camping stove or propane grill to cook too. They last a while, are cheap, and you will eventually eat them anyway.

Read the menus and ingredients. The DoD has watered down the contract so much that MREs can be mostly sugar and still meet specs. The kosher and halal versions usually have less crap and better ingredients though you miss out on those tasty pork rib meat patties in bbq sauce.
 
There's no guarantee that 72 hours will get you through a real emergency. A good asteroid strike will be a lot longer and a zombie apocalypse could be forever. Stock up on ammo and plan on going cannibal on day one, it's the only way to be sure of an abundant supply.

Brainhulk, check the longevity of whatever you buy for the temperature range in which you will store the food.

i don't go to the range much anymore. i have plenty of ammo still. What is the shelf life on 9mm, .45, and 12 guage shotgun shells?
 
I like MREs cause of the flameless ration heaters. Just a bit of water, and you can have hot food. I also haven't noticed a sweeter direction in the last 10 years or so. They're same as I remember.

WW2 surplus still fires if it's been stored correctly. The beauty of cannibalism is that it's win-win-win

You win by having lots of food available
You win because when you eat a person you can take their guns and ammo and replenish your own.
You win because every person you eat is one less person that needs to be fed or is scavenging for supplies

You know it's going to happen eventually. The people most likely to survive are the ones who accept that the situation will inevitably degrade to stewpots filled with the fatties who were not prepared for what was coming. Plan accordingly. Instead of stocking food for 3 days and then resorting to cannibalism you're going to be ahead of the curve if you don't stockpile food at all and begin eating your neighbors immediately.

You might run the risk of it being a simple storm-related power outage and things get restored to normalcy 24 hours later, but better safe than sorry.
 
Wish I had a enough money for a year's supply. I'm one of those that feel the super volcano in Yellowstone is going up one day. It is over due. You will need enough food and water for at least a year. Plus, you better be packing heat to ward off the desperate. If you're on medication, you will almost be SOL. God's way of thinning the herd I guess. It will be every man or family for themselves and not even FEMA can help you.
 
You don't have a fridge and pantry? We probably have enough food in the fridge and pantry to last for months even if we stopped buying grocery.

When Yellowstone goes up a years supply of food won't help you. Unless you have a bunker and some seriously expensive air filters you're toast long before you'll starve. Volcanic ash in the air over the entire country for days is pretty much a death sentence for anything with lungs.

That's not something to be concerned with, we're talking about a 640,000 year interval between major eruptions, so "overdue" still has a 20,000 year margin of error. For a country that's 200 years old the prospect of the inevitable Yellowstone cataclysm happening in the year 22,016 isn't too daunting a prospect.

A fridge won't mean anything when there is no power. Even if you had a NG backup generator, the NG processing plant may not be manned. No running water either. This is that super volcano scenario though.

WTF does living outside have to do with anything? The air inside your house can't last without circulation and whatever coming in has volcanic ash in in. Not smoke, ash. That's vaporized rock and glass that gets breathed in, cuts your lungs to ribbons and turns to mud which suffocates you. Unless you have a 100% secure air supply that's filtered you're dead. The end.

To short attention span idiots "overdue" means "in my lifetime" and in geologic time it could mean longer than modern man has existed on the planet. If you're truly concerned about Yellowstone being "overdue" and you think you need to prep for it, then it's for the best that you think a years supply of food will be the difference between life and death. You're 100% doomed and the surviving gene pool would be better off without your DNA. If we're still here on this continent when Yellowstone erupts we're toast and all the food on Earth won't change that.

If you're inside the ash won't get you. Unless you're that concerted tape your windows. One of the reasons why Homeland Security back then mentioned having duct tape was in case of a chemical attack. That will get you in a house.

Of course you will have to mask up and shovel the ash off your roof periodically.
 
I've tried the Mountain House stuff. Shit is expensive but my low-quality taste buds like the taste -- on the other hand, what cheaper food is rated to last like a decade. The stuff I tried was freeze-dried though, so you may need water, heat, and a cooking vessel.
 
72 hours is nothing. You can survive on Ramen and M&Ms in that small amount of time. A true apocalypse? Yeah, I guess get a couple of those Costco pallets mentioned. Rationed in half you should be able to make one pallet last about 6 years...assuming you have the water and fuel necessary to cook the stuff.
