Holy $hit, it was a long long time since I was this amazed at a piece of software....

There's just nothing more to say... holy $hit...

On a sidenote, it actually ran fairly well on my AXP 1.46 GHz with a GF3 Ti200@250/250.
Not great or anything, but maybe around 30 FPS or so.

That is, until something happened and it dropped to something like 1/20 FPS, but I get the feeling that was a bug more than a hardware limitation.

A tip for those that don't want to wade through millions of posts all over the net.

Delete the file named DoomConfig.cfg in you base directory.
Doom will generate a new one, which for me at least, gave much better performance, as well as fullscreen.

Since i keep getting asked.
heres a copy & paste from the instuctions.
(well "some" of the instructions, there are ALOT more console commands)

Instructions for playing Doom 3 demo:

1. Unrar (duh)

2. In your Doom_III\base directory, open the runact.cfg file.

3. Comment out the last line. In other words, add the "#" sign in front of the string "devmap $e3_intro" so it looks like the following:

#devmap $e3_intro

4. Launch the game using the main exe.

5. Press the tilde key to bring down the console (just like Q3)

6. Type the following: exec runact.cfg

7. Hit enter, and then go grab a soda. Seriously, it takes about 5 mins to load all the crap.

8. Once it is done, you can launch the intro movie, or play yourself.

ALL COMMANDS ARE TYPED FROM THE CONSOLE
To get to fullscreen mode
type r_fullscreen 1
then type vid_restart for it to take effect.

high rez textures type exec highquality.cfg
med rez textures type exec mediumquality.cfg

Checking FPS: type com_drawfps 1
Video resolution.
Type r_mode 3
3 = 640x480
4=800x600
5=1024x768
6=1152x864
7=1280x1024
8=1600x1200

Youll need to type vid_restart for changes to take seffect.

From the console, use the following commands:
map e3/intro (Loads intro movie)
map e3/e3_1 (Loads first map)
map e3/e3_2 (Loads second map)
map e3/e3_3 (Loads third map)
map fred/e3bathroom5 (won't work for some people)

Changing controls:
From the console, type: bindlist

This will list all the currently bound keys and their functions. Use the page up and page down keys to scroll through the list. The controls for standard movement are not bound to the regular WASD config, so type the following to put it back to normal:
bind w _forward
bind s _back
bind a _moveleft
bind d _moveright
Check out some of the other bindings, God mode and give health are already bound for you :)

Theres a million more options to change!

is there more than one version of this demo floating around? Anyone having problems with this game running under XP? Are there any other cool tricks out there to get this game running smoothly?

Yeah, i know you dont need the runact.cfg.

Tried both ways, didnt seem to matter.

I just copied & pasted the instructions I got online.

No way im typing all that crap out!

Thank god no-one has asked for ALL the console commands!
Printed them out & it took 8 pages!

from ieXbeta.com Forums:

Invert Mouse:

m_pitch -0.022
The default setting is m_pitch 0.022, all you need to do is add the negative sign

Also to run benchmarks:

Launch Doom III.
Pull down the console and type
timedemo activate_demo1.demo
Run it twice for best results, or just exec the e3_1 "touch" config file

Hey does that trick work in Quake III?

Or does anyone else know a console command to invert the mouse in Q3. I let people play on my box sometimes and they invert the mouse..everything is faster through the console so if I knew the command I'd be set.

Back on topic:
Doom III is going to be the shiznot. It runs great on my 9700pro. There are definately some bugs in the leaked version but it runs well enough to give you an idea of what we are in for.

It's also going to be scary. Very scary.

anyone have a copy of that link that's replaced now with a image. I read it once and it had a whole bunch of cool tips.

I get 30fps and the slowest it drops to is around 10fps. P2.53Ghz 512MB, ti4400, win2k.

My 4 yr old was scared to death. After he played it for 45 seconds he was too scared to play anymore. Well at least he watched.

heh i remember my dad and i would play Wolfenstein 3D when i was little. id open the doors and move, and he'd shoot. Good times, those gameplaying sessions [im 16 now]!

Does anyone know how to get the Fred Bathroom level to work? Does anyone know what this level IS?

Its the 4th map in the alpha, but it seems to bug out. I read on some site last night about how to get it to work, but I cant remember the site, and its prolly been shut down now!

Copy & pasted from another thread "elsewhere".
(no need to chance getting another good site shutdown) ;)

Delete your DoomConfig.cfg, run the game so it builds another one, then open the file with wordpad and tweak those setting and remember to restart the engine with vid_restart when you make the changes:

Change to 1 to enable 0 to disable;

com_drawfps = 1 Draws Fps counter
com_maxfps = 125 (any number) Limits Fps
com_drawhud = 0 Enables drawing of heads up display, disabling should help improve fps a little bit

Adjust those three next according to how much memory you got:
com_preloadDemos = 0
r_varmegs = 92
s_cacheSize = 16

Those 4 next are the ones that make Doom3 juicy, so don't disable them unless you have serious performance problems and you wanna experience the game with all the visuals tuned down:

r_diffuse = 0 Enables diffuse mapping (Disable for speed, enable for quality)
r_skipBump = 1 I guess that disables bump mapping when on
r_specular = 0 Enables specular mapping (Disable for speed, enable for quality)
r_useStandardGL = 0 Disables bump mapping and maybe more

The next 4 ones are about your hardware and drivers:

r_useParhelia = 0 Enable if you got a matrox parhelia graphics card
r_useNV20 = 1 Enable if you got a Gf3-Gf4Ti graphics card
r_useNV30 = 0 You wouldn't need instructions for that
r_useGL2 = 0 Don't enable it unless you got beta drivers with OpenGL2 support

r_mode = 2 Changes the resolution( 1=400x300, 2=512x384, 3=640x480, 4=800x600, 5=1024x768, 6=1152x864, 7=1280x1024)

r_depthbits = 16 or 24 Changes z-buffer bits (you should be able to lower it to 16bits on Gf3 and above even if r_colorbits = 32)

r_stencilbits = 0 or 8 Changes stencil buffer bits (setting it to 0 should disable stencil shadows, not so sure if the game would still work)

r_colorbits = 16 Changes colorbits, lower it to 16 if you got Gf-Gf2mx-Gf2gts..

r_ext_compress_textures = 1 Enables texture compressing, enable it unless you have a 128mb graphics card (Enable for speed, disable for quality)

r_ext_texture_filter_anisotropic = 0 Enables anisotropic filtering (Disable for speed, enable for quality)

r_fullscreen = 1 Enables fullscreen

image_filter = GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_NEAREST Changes texture filtering methode (change to GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_NEAREST for better performance, default is GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR and improves quality)

r_shadows 0 Shadows on/off (Disable for speed, enable for quality)

r_useOptimizedShadows = 1
r_useExternalShadows = 1
image_usePrecompressedTextures "1"
image_useAllFormats "1"
image_compressBump "1"
image_compressSpecular "1"
image_compressDiffuse "1"
image_preload "1"
image_depth "2"
image_colorMipLevels "0"
image_anisotropy "0"
