It did dude. I remember firing up Halflife the first day it was in the store. I remember my computer had an Aureal A3D sound card and when u start the game u descended menacingly down in the tram with that sweet sound filling the room in full glorios 3d sound. What a freaking spooky start to the game. And then all the grenades and sweet weapons and twists and turns in the plot and excellent graphics and great cut scenes. When this game came out....no other 3d fps could touch it....Only dumb part of the game was the alien world...that sucked

I know Lukfilm, I too am laughing my a** off at that. lol

I dont see how a single player game can rule a world of FPS but alright.

Well, if you don't see how, then you obviously weren't around back then, or you weren't paying attention. Because it definitely did.

I don't know what games you were playing, but why not scour the net for reviews of Half Life. Sure, the engine might not have been revolutionary, but the gameplay and the graphics *still* whupped the living crap out of anything. The only thing that could have compared was Unreal, and you know how that was.... If you don't, well, one word to sum it up was....boring. Half life was everything BUT boring. Get out from under that rock, your skin's a little too pasty for our tastes :disgust:

I dont know if I would say "it will run as fast as quake3" but im sure it will be optimized. I would say the minimum requirements are gonna be significantly higher than quake3's.

It will run as fast as Quake 3, eventually. At the speed we're moving with video cards and processors, it probably won't take very long. Don't you remember when Quake3 first came out? We didn't have huge fps counts either.

Half-Life's single player game was great. It was one of the few FPS games I wanted to finish because it was actually really good. The AI was also really good.

Valve came out with a single smash hit, but that was back in 1998. Not enough to be considered a "good track record" despite how acclaimed Half Life was (never got into the game myself, although the 3d sound was amazing :)) Aren't they STILL working on Team Fortress 2? Anyway, more interested in seeing what a group like Raven Software does with the engine as they're working on Quake 4

Their track record, again, is not their retail game(s), but the support they give to mod-makers, which in turn leads to so many people playing HL mods.

I'll chime in as well. Half Life friggin rocked! Still my favorite game of all time. Everything about it was revolutionary in its day. The story, the AI was awesome! The sound has yet to be matched to this day.

BTW, take a look at how popular Half Life (CS and other mods) still is for online play. HERE. The results may surprise you.

I'd have to side with the HL was great in it's time. Best story in a FPS to date, no doubt about it. Multi play was fun, but some of the weapons left something to be desired, though I did love the crossbow. *Thunk* eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee (flatline sound).

I also really like the airstrike level where you could run into the bunker, throw the switch, and everyone outside died. I still remember playing the level with others the first time, and the sirens started wailing. Everyone was like "WTF?" Then we all died. LOL.

I would admit, though, that I doubt Valve can have lightning strike twice. They haven't progressed, but have kept re-hashing the same product over and over. They need to move on and do something different.

The Doom series is probably my favorite of all time. When it came out, man I was having pixelated nightmares. I remember my wife coming up behind me while I was playing in the middle of the night and putting her hand on my shoulder. I hit the roof. I almost crapped my pants. LOL

I was glad to see Id doing another foray into the series. Screenshots look fantastic, and lets face it....Id hasn't really had any flops. I'm expecting great things from DIII. It's definately a "buy the day it's out" game for me.

To all the Valve bashes, lemme ask you this: can you name another game is still updated and supported 4+ years after the initial release? Pretty tough, not even ID software or Epic can claim that. Sure, Valve is a bit late with the updates for cheating, etc, but they still have games on the market (albiet old) and are still supporting the existing title out there. Their existing title works for Win95, Win98, NT4, Win2k, WinXP, not all games out there can claim that either.

As fas as Doom3 goes, just pick a price point and upgrade to that. There is no point in upgrading now, when the game is clearly going to be released next year. If you want to upgrade for Doom3, start saving now and get top of the line next year. Even though the ATI 9700 pro and a 2.2ghz processor was running Doom3, we all know those will be much cheaper come next year and your same dollar will be buying systems 2x as fast.

If you've never played Half-Life, I can understand your skepticism about how a company with only 1 real title in the last couple of years can elicit so much faith. But it really was so far ahead of EVERYTHING on the market at the time you simply cannot believe it. Unreal was the other big FPS at the time and I was far more excited about that title than Half-Life. Well it was basically just a boring run and shoot single player that was gorgeous. Half-Life on the other hand, showed us what a FPS game could be. If you haven't played it, I'd urge you to pick it up. You can probably get it for like $10. It'll probably be the best $10 you'll ever spend.

yeah, in the beginning, i wasn't really impressed by half-life- especially after coming off from Unreal Tourney and Quake 3, both of which look so much better. But for some reason, HL: CS was just so much more responsive, better speed, control, and gameplay.

I'm not sure which game came first, but I would think Half life, Thief and System Shock 2 were released around the same time. I'm guessing Thief, then Half life, then SS2? Anyway, this is just my opinion, but while HL (not talking about its mods) isn't a bad game and all, I do think that Thief and SS2 were better games. Maybe I just like that sort of FPS (including Deus Ex) better, dunno. But it does amaze me how so many people rave on about HL when Thief and SS2 get so little recognition. Thief and SS2 rank among my favourite games. HL had its moments, but just didn't grip me the way Thief and SS2 did. Just my 2 cents.

thanks,

No, you need at least a 4GHz Athlon XP 4500+, 1 GB RD-RAM(will be out for the Athlon in 2010, same date when Doom 3 will be released) and at LEAST a Radeon Pro 9700. That's what you need at least to run it at 320x240, 16-bit colors and low-detail.
