Doom3... scariest game ever?

i know im abit behind the times...my old system wouldn't run doom3 for sh*t..now that i got this new one though...running it at the max settings (resolution is 1280x960 highest my monitor supports...) i finally bought it...and i have to say...with surround sound...turned up loud....all settings on highest....this game scares me. im 21 😵 i havnt been scared in a videogame since i saw the t rex come out of nowhere in tombraider the first day that game came out. (i had no idea there was a t rex! it was huge!)

anyone know of a modern game that is scarier than doom3? quake4 not even close. its the sound in doom3 i think that gets me... anyone else notice?

heh well im open to suggestions but...after being exposed to modern games its hard to have the fear of blocky hands and retro textures.

Doom 3 is boring as Hell. 😉

keep playing' . . . after the ten thousandth "boo" it gets really OLD.

Thief - DS, 'Shalebridge' level has a hundred times more "suspense" and scares . . . from '04

and SS2 and AvPII are WAAY better than D3 . . . even with old gfx. 😉

well thats your opinion. but i dont feel the fear in...thief...or fear for that matter...
doom3 is a good game in my opinion.

FEAR had more eerie and scary moments then Doom did for me IMO. D3 had way too many "boo" moments like someone said, and was the same thing over and over, with trap doors flying open behind you and whatnot. I must say that D3 did have a fantastic atmosphere and good sound.

hmm, maybe i havnt played doom enough lol...and i only played the demo of fear...maybe during the game it gets worse...i think though the audio is what gets me the most. ill give hl2 a try and see how that goes aswell.

it is the opinion of 90% of us [here] that have actually managed to finish that crap game. 😉

did you play Shalebridge level in Thief 3?

and yes, F.E.A.R. did have more suspense than those "cheap Boos" in D3.

curious, what kind of horror movies do you like?
Slash and gore . . . or suspense?
[is Doom3 the top of your list in movies?]

Normally I would cry "REPOST", but you're a newb so I'll forgive you.

Alien Vs. Predator 2 was a lot scarier.
F.E.A.R didnt entirely live up to its namesake but it was still a lot better than Doom3.
Heck, I got more chills in parts of Max Payne and Duke3D than anywhere in D3.
And those are just shooters. I got the heebie-jeebies in plenty of graphic adventure games before. (Hell and Bad Mojo and Still Life and 7th guest and 11th hour.)

Nope, they tried too hard and missed the target completely. So many things went wrong with that game, the scary part couldnt survive.

That's the freakiest level in a game I've ever played, hands down..

Other games worthy of an honorable mention:
Silent Hill 3
Eternal Darkness
System Shock 2
Resident Evil: Code Veronica

Doom3 was scarier than System Shock 2 for me. The first part of Shalebridge is extremely scary but it is really only 1 scare, they couldn't make a game out of that but it was a very nice way to work a scare into the game. Same as Vampire Bloodlines hotel level. Not to stomp on those successes, I think it is much easier to make an extremely scary level than it is to make an extremely scary game, where you have to continously up the scares.

Undying does do scary much better than Doom3 though. Fear did a pretty good job, it's mainly scary in tiny bits. And once you get into Silent Hill and Fatal Frame, the PC games get rocked.

Doom 3 wasn't scary after the first couple of lvls, because you knew what was coming based on past experiences. If you thought something was gonna break in from a wall, or come up from behind, it probably happened. It needed to be more random.

That being said, I remember that scariest moment in PC gaming history for me. Quake 1. Not sure what lvl it was, but it was one of the first. You opened a big door with 2 levitating blocks....door opens....blackness...then.......BAM!!! A huge nasty dog leaps 50 feet onto your face with teeth galore. I remember my grandma was ironing, and I couldn't help but scream "HOLY S#@!". She was not impressed. Makes me laugh thinking about it, now.

AvP2 Marine Campaign gets my vote for one of the most suspenseful/scary games. Motion tracker + dynamic music + scripted events = nice effects.

Clive Barker's Undying had some scares. Heck, even the Ravenholm level in HL2 was scarier than D3.

AvP with marine in the dark 😀. Doom3 got rather predictable, oh another door, wonder what is gonna be behind it.

I cant be scared, only shocked. The only game that has ever shocked me to the point of physically turning white was resident evil 2 when i was 12. The licked jumped through the interrogation room window, also early on in the police station, the hands suddenly shooting through the windows caught me off guard.

i dont know about you guys, but those monkeys in SS2 scared the be jesus outta me

Midwives scare the hell out of monkeys. Besides the monkeys were weak, you could melee them to death.

Though after a while it's like "enough is enough already..." Doom 3 is one of the scariest games I've played in a very long time. Agreed, Doom 3, like every high profile game, has its disappointments. But for what it was I thoroughly enjoyed it. SS2 deserves the mention it's been getting too.

In both Doom 3 and SS2 I liked the feelings of dread I would get reading the various logs knowing the author had since then met an untimely, gruesome demise. I've become such a pansy I couldn't play Doom 3 for long periods of time because it was so intense at times.

heh but for those first 2 levels..when your playing alone in the middle of the night + surround sound turned up...doom is f'in scarey! i played it abit since then and realized what u mean about the monotony setting in quickly...but man that first level scared the bejesus out of me last night when i made this post lol
