Let me ask you this - when you think of the FPS genre, what games immediately pop into your head?

Counter-Strike. And most of the world agrees with me, BEEEEYOTCH :p

The only gamers that would say CS are the ones that didn't ever touch the classics. CS is on the decline as it has been since 1.3. Its still one of the best team based multiplayer games out there, but its losing its power.

skoorb... no one gives a crap about your opinions about hl2 vs doom3...
many people like to play quake3, doom was many people's favorites. Just because you don't like them, don't mean you need to go say id can't make games and could only make 3d engines..

CS has more fun in a single level of dust played for 8 hours long than Quake 3 ever had :) I don't play it anymore, but it is one of the most successful FPS games.

When I think of an FPS game off the bat, I think of doom, because of the media hysteria. But, I don't play it anymore, and neither does anybody here. I was in enthralled the first time I saw it, like I could hardly believe what I was seeing, but that was a decade ago.

CS is definitely one of the best games ever. Of course it was better back in the beta days, but even still the gameplay nowadays is still awesome. I SERIOUSLY hope they redo CS on the HL2 engine.

Once you list your qualifications about why anybody would give a crap about YOUR opinions, I'll list mine. You first.

CS is definitely better than quake 3, no argument here. And I played cs hardcore for ~2.5 years. I have since moved on to bigger and better things (Ravenshield). I'll pick it back up again if it comes out for HL2, but until then, I'm done with it. RS is better than it in every way imaginable.

A guy at work keeps going on about RS, but I've never played it. He plays on a P3 800, and he doesn't even realize how sad that is :(

Doom 3 may or may not beat 1942, and I'd bet that BF Vietnam will beat 1942.

I have to say that HL2 pwns Doom3's ass, if only because it will be more than a technology demo, which is all that idsoftware is capable of doing; making engines. Hopefully somebody will apply a game worth playing to this doom3 engine, and then we can really talk :)

Oh yeah, because Valve has made so many great games. There's half life, then there's half life, then there's half life for ps2, and you can't forget half life. And of course there's always half life. Valve's impressive lineup of half life, half life, half life, and half life completely outdo everything Id has ever done. I mean, what games has Id really made? Doom? Who played that game? And the quake series, now those games really sucked ass.

In summary, saying that all Id is capable of doing is making engines is just stupid. To say that Doom 3 will be only a technology demo is even stupider. It's bordering on insanely bleeping idiotic.

Well said
It amazing how people keep praising Valve when all they did was just 1 damm game and thay had to borrow the engine to do it.
My favorite game was Quake2 and that had 0 story line.
So now everyone is salivating how great HL2 based on what ??? The trailer ??
Hell, the Duke Nukem forever trailer was awesome too but, well you know.

Actually my favorite FPS was Duke Nukem 3D.
Now if someone was to combine Duke Nukem with the Doom engine.....I'll start salivating.

Game If that were an FPS, or if there were an FPS version of it, that'd be my favortite. :p

I think that the newer graphics engines "need" to come out so graphics card developers have something to work on and vice versa.

The one thing Half Life pwns over Doom 3 in is interactive environments... Doom 3, the Alpha, imo played just like Doom 1. It was a bunch of walking through stuff but no picking up chairs and throwing them or blowing up windows. It just annoys the crap out of me when I shoot a window expecting a huge explosion of glass.. and nothing.. my weapons are ineffective against the almighty window.

Doom 3 has a lot of hype behind it.. But from the alpha, I am completely unimpressed so far. I think UT2k4 and HL2 will best ID software in everything but the pretty little graphics.

Was there even a real footage trailer of DNF?

Also, you condemn HL for borrowing an engine, but so did Duke 3d, your favorite game :)

Have you ever pre-release tested a game before?

doom 3 alpha wasnt ever meant for consumption... i plan on buying hl2 and doom3.. and loving both. unreal games are boring and all the same. same motion cap's, same looking levels/weapons/etc etc etc.

Yes there was about 2 or 3 years ago at E3 Expo.
Everyone was gushing on how awesome it was....I did too.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe 3d realms used their own engine for DukeNukem 3D.
3D realms also used the same engine for a bunch of other games. Rise of the triad, Redneck Rampage, and another game where a ninja was the main character.

It's really a shame that RS hasn't received very much exposure. Everyone is so stuck on CS that they don't even bother looking for a better game. I swear to you that a ton of CS players would drop it like a rock if they got their hands on RS.

Hey look, some chump over at ATGamers even wrote a review on Raven Shield, wait, he has the same name as me, oh yeah, I wrote the review
