Doom3 preys upon our natural fear of the dark, hearing thing scuffle, scuttle, slither, slink, clatter and clang in the dark dredges up all manner of horrifying imagery. You have to let your primal fear out to play with this game in order to enjoy it.

Exactly! Sort of like when athletes psyche themselves out at a big competition, you have to psyche yourself out a little bit when playing Doom 3. I don't enjoy it that much during the daytime and stopped playing it when the sun is up. But at nighttime in a pitch-black room with all of the shades drawn, the 5.1 sound thumping away, and a rickety in-wall air-conditioner providing background hum, I can let my mind play tricks on me and really enjoy Doom 3.
That is what this game is all about  As I said, if it had gone for more of an Event Horizon style of evil I would probably have to stop playing for fear I'd stroke out!

Am I the only person here who thinks that many ppl favor DIII or HL2 just for fanatic purposes? (see ATI and Nvidia)
Guys it's just a game...

Never mind I don't expect an answer(especially a sincere one)

I have a top notch system. The problem I have with DOOM3 is the lack of changes in scenery. If they had missions that had some graphical differences it would have been the best game I have played to date. Why not have a couple missions outside??? I mean I can't even begin to describe where I'm at in the game, other than the name of the level. I will definetly finish the game .......but I do not see myself playing any part of it again. Absolutely no replay value...I'm sorry to say. One other thing. I find it totally funny how I can shoot a shotgun in real life a hell of a lot faster then this super Marine can in the game. What a joke.:) From buggy a%% beta Far Cry to repetetive Doom3....Yawn. Maybe "a day late and a dollar short" HL2 will have the last laugh after all.....that would be hilarious.. Especially when STALKER has been postponed until next year. God I hope Rome total war will save the day....:)

How the heck would the zombies breathe outside, smart guy?!?!?!

LOL, JK. I don't know, I don't think outside on Mars would add much to it. The Mars terrain is probably pretty boring, and you would know when you came up to any tall rock, an imp would be behind it.
It would add much humor to the game to see the zombies roaming a barren space landscape, although I don't know if they were shooting for laughs?

Maybe if they added a sandstorm to the desert landscape that might help. Hell I don't know.....just something to give a change of scenary. I have no problems with the lighting effects though...I think the darkness adds to the game. I was just hoping for some variety...thats all:)) I'm probably picking on it to much. I guess the hype was to much and unfortunately that can be bad news for a game. Hell look at Gamespot review of Unreal when it came out...an 8.4/10....???? They must not have had a Pentium II with two 12MB Voodoo2s in SLI. LOL We should all probably be happy with the leaps in hardware and software that companies are achieveing this year.....that in itself is quite amazing. I'm complaining and I'm playing games at 1600x1200 with all the eye-candy turned on......go figure!!! This year is quite revolutionary in the gaming area and "We" gamers should be happy and enjoy:) It is only going to get better!!

I like the game, it's sort of like Halo but with better graphics.
Dark is eary and fun especially late at night.

I didnt read the whole thread, so I didnt see the question before. It just seems like a dumb sticky. Whatever makes you feel better though?

What it seems like and what it IS are two seperate things. Before you post read the entire article otherwise it is considered trolling.

In your opinion. In my opinion its a dumb sticky. Everyone knows it is supposed to be dark, but that doesnt make it better for everyone. But I wont derail this thread anymore. Have fun.

Obviously everyone doesn't know that it is supposed to be dark otherwise we wouldn't have people maxing out the gamma and complaining about it.

Ok, I just got to the "Hell" level. How much further/longer does this go on for? Though i'm happy to be somewhere else with different visual aspects (this level as opposed to being cooped up inside the facility), i'm kinda getting bored with the game, but feel obligated to play it out.

Spoilers:

You still have a ways. Get the cube, get out of Hell, find Kelly, go down into the dig sites below the facility, fight the cyberdemon.

If you have played the game and not jumped across the room do to one thing or another, then you aren't expierencing the game the way it should be.

The darkness allows you to pull out the light and not be freaked (and chance of getting thwomped) or be a man and enter the room gun in hand, stomach on edge, and hope you can see before it sees you.

An article in the detroit free press reviewed the game (there is a "Game-On" section that reviews games on Sunday and special days for special games (ie doom 3 front page the 4th).
The guy summed up the game in one sentence....

"I have never felt so physically uncomfortable and pchycologically bended in a game ever before."

It SHOULD be dark or the game looses feel and fun.
Without the atmosphere it is just another FPS.

The darkness needs to be there. I doubt that I am the only one who tried to kill a monster with the flashlight:)

The game is cool and I actually jump when I get surprised.

I was just talking about that with PacFu tonight and his woman thought we were crazy for being startled by a video game :)

I beaned a zombie soldier over the head with my flashlight because the bastard jumped out at me while I was peering into his dark corner. After pulling off a shot on me, I disintegrated his ass with a second well placed whip to his face :D

Maybe try backing up your saved game files and reinstalling... many many people have passed that part without any trouble... so reinstalling will eliminate software errors as a possibility.
